About AMS:

Photo of Alternative Boarding School in North CarolinaAMS provides a safe and loving environment where our students learn to question and evaluate, think creatively and work cooperatively. A low student/teacher ratio ensures individualized instruction and guidance. Students and staff honor the Quaker values of simplicity, responsibility, service, personal integrity, nonviolent conflict resolution and respect for self, others and the environment.

Community Life:
The Arthur Morgan School is a community, and in many fundamental ways the lives of everyone here—students and staff—are shared. Not only do we learn together, we cook, clean, hike, travel, build, plant and harvest together.

As in a family, we spend a lot of time working out problems and misunderstandings. Each year it takes time for the group to develop its sense of unity and direction. AMS strives to be a safe place for people to express their feelings. The group spirit that results from our endeavors is essential to the success of our community.

Outdoor Program:
AMS is located near the Blue Ridge Parkway in the beautiful South Toe River valley at the foot of the Black Mountains in North Carolina. The 105-acre campus consists mainly of woods and meadows and is largely surrounded by the Pisgah National Forest. A typical day includes a lot of walking and biking, whether between boarding homes and campus or during free time.

There is a pond on school property where students can swim, canoe and ice skate. While work on the land and long walks in the woods are a part of our daily living, there are three extended outdoor trips per academic year that prove to be some of the most memorable experiences for AMS students and staff alike. An average group size for trips is six to nine students and two or three staff.

Boarding Program:
Boarding students live in four family-style homes with four or five students and two house parents. They share morning, evening and weekend meals together and work cooperatively to cook, clean and maintain the home. There are basic rules that students must follow; however, the day-to-day running of the houses is up to each individual house group, which creates its own family atmosphere.

On most weekends, housemates will do work projects together and may go on outings to do grocery shopping or to do something fun together off campus. The bonds that are made between students in a house and between students and their house parents are among the strongest and most enduring connections made at the school.
