MacDuffie welcomes students whose native language is not English. Applicants must have an intermediate mastery of English and a desire to acquire a more sophisticated understanding and usage of the language.
Based on test performance and other information contained in the application, students are placed in either mainstream or ESL courses. There are three levels of ESL – ESL II, ESL III, and ESL IV.

Upper School Arts:
The purpose of Art Education at MacDuffie is to facilitate the ability to express oneself, to develop empathy for others and ultimately enhance the student’s life, long after he/she has completed formal education.
We teach the skills and knowledge necessary to create and appreciate art. Students must develop creative thinking, learn to work in a cooperative fashion, learn how to express creative ideas in verbal and nonverbal ways, and present a finished product.
In order to fully appreciate visual and performing art, the student is exposed to performances and actual works of art. Students also study art history and examine the historic role of art. Students in the Upper School are required to take a minimum of one year of art for graduation. This credit may be in visual or performing arts or a combination of the two.

Located in Great Barrington, in the Berkshires area of west Massechusetts, The John Dewey Academy is a year-round college preparatory therapeutic boarding school for troubled teens ages 15-21. Serving Grades 10-12 and Postgraduate students, we provide an individualized and comprehensive education in a non-traditional therapeutic school setting. Located in northwestern Montana, Turning Winds Academic Institute (TWAI) is an accredited, family-run, therapeutic boarding school for troubled teens (boys and girls) ages 13-18.We welcome students from Massachusetts, across the U.S., and students from around the world (TWAI is authorized to issue 1-20's for international students).
In our beautiful, peaceful, and safe location, we combine the benefits of a therapeutic boarding school, a wilderness program, and a residential treatment center (RTC).
TWAI has been serving struggling teens and their families since 2002, with an exceptional degree of success.

TWAI graduates average a 3.5 GPA. It is common for a student to complete 1.5 years of course work in 1 year.

Located in Plymouth County MA, Chamberlain International School is a co-educational therapeutic boarding and day school, serving students ages 11-22 from Massachusetts, across the United States, and throughout the world. We offer college preparatory and general education courses to both middle and high school students. As well as academics, Chamberlain offers on-campus diagnostic programming, individual therapy, psychiatric services, therapeutic groups, nursing care, and family therapy.
