St. Timothy’s School, Raleigh:
St. Timothy's School is a private, Episcopal, coeducational preparatory school serving grades K-8 located in Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina. Our families come Apex, Cary, Clayton, Fuquay-Varina, Garner, Holly Springs, Louisburg, Knightdale, Wake Forest, Wendell and Rolesville. Throughout its history of over five decades, St. Timothy's has remained committed to three principles established by Father Hale in the early years - small classes, strong academics and an Episcopal foundation. These principles have allowed St. Timothy's to remain a dynamic choice for parents in the Raleigh area for over 50 years.
Kindergarten:
Children develop and experience success in a variety of ways. Kindergarten provides a rich and stimulating curriculum, which includes Physical Education, computer class, Spanish, art, music, science lab, library, and chapel; as well as the basic academic subjects of reading, mathematics, science, and social studies.
Grades 1-4:
Mathematics and reading are the primary focus for students in grades 1-4. Students perform at or above grade level and are homogeneously grouped for math and reading according to academic achievement, developmental readiness, and the speed at which they work.
The language arts program allows students to develop appropriate verbal and written expression. The program includes grammar, writing, spelling and handwriting. Students create and use complete sentences as they learn the correct form and structure for writing letters, paragraphs and stories.
The goal of the social studies program is to allow students to gain an understanding of themselves and their communities through activities that focus on geography, economics and sociology. Map skills, geography study, films, books, written reports and individual projects are used to enhance learning.
The science program teaches basic scientific skills and concepts as a foundation for learning. Both physical and biological scientific concepts are introduced. Instructional materials include lectures, discussions, teacher demonstrations, experiments, field trips and independent research. A weekly visit to the science lab reinforces concepts learned in the classroom.
Grades 5-8:
The instructional program at St. Timothy's is organized to challenge each individual to perform to his fullest potential. Small classes foster the development of close relationships between faculty and students and allow the teachers to be responsive to individual differences in learning styles, abilities, and interests.
The academic program emphasizes appropriate activities in reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, science instruction, science lab, Spanish and Latin.
Students learn to read effectively, to communicate clearly and to think logically. Students are assigned to heterogeneous homerooms and are grouped by ability for math and reading instruction. All grades use the computer labs for computer instruction.
Reading is at the heart of the instructional program at all levels. The curriculum emphasizes basic reading skills, vocabulary, and instruction in phonetic, structural, and contextual word analysis. Written and oral expression are emphasized and an Honors Reading program is introduced in third grade. Middle School literature is a thematic study using novels and selections of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, short stories, and drama. Personalized reading, special-interest reading, and reading for pleasure are encouraged.
Mathematics instruction aims at mastery of computational skills and problem solving from beginning kindergarten instruction to geometry in eighth grade. Art, music, technology and physical education complement the academic program. For 5th-8th grade, plays and musical programs are among the special events on the school calendar. A cultural arts program of music, drama events, writing seminars, and art are also enjoyed during the school year.
At St. Timothy's, our goal is to create a caring, supportive environment where students can experience the joy of learning. We promote a child's self-esteem by making sure each student receives individual attention, encouragement, and support.
