Distance Learning American Education in Tokyo, Japan

Contact Our School

Ookayama International School, Tokyo:
Ookayama International School (OIS) in Tokyo, Japan offers an alternative to the larger international schools in Tokyo. The school offers distance learning programs for grades 7-12 (ages 12 - 18) and students must attend our school to participate in them. We provide a fully accredited American high school education which has helped numerous students go on to higher education in Japan and overseas. Distance learning allows for many unique opportunities not available in the more traditional school system.

About OIS:

Ookayama international School was started in 2003 because the owners saw that Tokyo was in need of a smaller school where students could receive more individualized attention. More traditional schools focus on the group, but at OIS we focus on the individual, not only academically, but on all the skills needed to succeed in society. These include areas such as co-operation, creativity, responsibility, respect for others, and communication. Our goal is to provide students with an all-round education which will give them the necessary skills to pursue their chosen careers after they leave school. Students learn in a relaxed atmosphere which fosters both personal growth and academic success.

Distance Learning American Education:

Students are enrolled on distance learning programs at North Dakota Center for Distance Education or at The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Independent Study High School. These programs are fully accredited through the North Central Association Commission and School Improvement (NCACASI) and the Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation (CITA). There are well over 200 different courses available for study.

Personalized Education Programs:
Education is personalized to suit individual student needs. The teaching staff has extensive experience of teaching students from a variety of backgrounds with particular educational needs. Instructors tailor their methods to suit individual learning styles, rather than expecting all students to follow a rigid classroom structure. This translates into quality instruction for every student and ensures the focus on the student is maintained. Class sizes of 1-5 allow for one-to-one tutoring if a student is struggling with a particular aspect of his or her study.

Students are encouraged to stay after school in supervised study halls, as teachers are available to give extra learning support at the end of the school day. Student progress is closely monitored, and faculty members are in contact with parents on a regular basis.

Location:

Ookayama International School (OIS) is located in a quiet residential neighborhood in Minami, Meguro-ku in Tokyo, Japan. The school is directly across from a small temple with a Japanese style garden and is surrounded by lush greenery. People often comment on how lovely the area is. It is also close to the Ookayama shopping street where students and staff can buy lunch at one of the many shops or restaurants. The nearest train station is Ookayama, which is on both the Tokyu Meguro and the Tokyu Oimachi lines.
