- a commitment to teaching as a career
- a desire to work with primary age children
- the personal and intellectual qualities needed to be an excellent primary teacher

Secondary Teacher Training:

PGCE (Secondary): Full-time
The full-time Postgraduate Certificate in Education is a 36-week course which prepares students to teach in secondary schools. There is a strong emphasis on practical school-based training supported by University-based seminars and lectures. Subjects you can specialise in include: English, Geography, History, Mathematics, Modern Languages, Science, Society, Health and Development

Your time in schools will include:
- a period of 'school experience', performing a variety of tasks and observations, and beginning to teach your subject specialism
- a thirteen-week period of teaching practice during which you will teach up to two thirds of a conventional teaching load
- a 'school-based inquiry' - which is an opportunity to reflect upon and develop skills and insights gained during the course

At the University you will attend lectures and seminars addressing:
- the specifics of teaching your chosen 'main method' - that is, your subject specialism
- cross-curricular 'professional studies' including:
- school improvement and school effectiveness
- the physical, social and emotional development of pupils
- pupil behaviour
- social issues in education
- professional conduct and continuing development as a teacher

School-based placements are undertaken in our Partnership Schools

Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) - one to three years part-time, flexible

The flexible PGCE course is a part-time route which allows you to take up to 3 years to complete the course and will qualify you to teach mathematics, modern languages or science in secondary schools. If you have had prior experience of working in schools or relevant study you may be exempted from certain aspects of the course.

This is largely a web-based course so regular access to the internet is essential. You will be required to attend tutorials at certain points in the course and an optional twilight seminar programme is offered in the School of Education. In addition, flexible route students are invited to attend the full-time PGCE course lectures and subject method sessions if they wish to do so.

Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP).
Employment Based Initial Teacher Training (EBITT) status enables The University of Nottingham to offer a Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP).This is an employment based route to achieving Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and is a one year programme of postgraduate training. Trainee teachers are employed, usually on a one year contract, by a school in a supernumerary capacity. You can expect to be paid a salary of about £15,100 on this route. Our motivation in putting the programme together has been to try to improve recruitment and retention in the East Midlands region, and particularly in the inner cities and former coalfields.

We offer places across four priority secondary subject areas: English; Mathematics; Languages, including community languages; Science

The underpinning principles of this programme are:
- commitment to teacher supply and retention in the area
- provision of a high quality, supernumerary training route

- integration within the University's ITT provision

The distinctive features of this programme are:
- a strong commitment to understanding the place of the school in the local community
- a focus on pupils' perspectives on teaching and learning
- commitment to ongoing professional development of the trainees
- links to Nottingham University Samworth Academy and Samworth Church Academy
