Nursing Programmes:

The Faculty of Health and Social Care is the largest provider of health and social care programmes in the South East of England. It prepares students to enter one of ten professions and offers continuing professional development programmes to registered and unregistered workers in health and social care. The Faculty has adopted an interprofessional learning philosophy to ensure that those who receive one of our awards are enabled to work collaboratively.

The Pre-registration Interprofessional Learning Programme:
BA / BSc(Hons) programmes leading to registration to practise in the UK are offered in Adult Nursing, Diagnostic Radiography, Child Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy (OT), Operating Department Practice, Paramedic Science and Social Work. The Faculty also offers a pre-registration Postgraduate Diploma in Speech and Language Therapy and an MA Social Work.

The three year full-time undergraduate programme is offered at the Canterbury and Medway campuses, beginning in September each year.  All pathways undertake some common modules and some that are specific to their chosen profession. Each includes practice placements where students are mentored to achieve their practice competences. Some programmes, for example nursing, have an overall balance of 50% practice and 50% theory, whilst others spend less time in practice, for example OT.  Practice placements in diverse setting are arranged by the Practice Learning Unit and are appropriate to the students’ learning needs.

Post-qualifying and Postgraduate Programmes:
The Faculty has a large number of modules and programmes for qualified practitioners at graduate and postgraduate levels. The graduate level programmes are for practitioners who have a Diploma-level qualification, which they wish to ‘top-up’ to a degree. They include clinical practice, specialist practice in social work and work-based learning.  The programmes are modular; students complete 6 x 20 credits modules at level 6 within a five year period.

Postgraduate part time programmes include the MSc Interprofessional Health and Social Care and MSc Advanced Practice for a range of professions, including our internationally renowned Clinical Reporting programme. Students undertake 9 x 20 credits modules to achieve their masters award. The University also has MA programmes in Play Therapy and Dance Movement Therapy, which are delivered in collaboration with professional partners.

In addition, there are two full-time, one year Masters awards for doctors; an MSc Cardiology and a MCh in Minimally Invasive Surgical Practice (offered in 2011, subject to validation). The Faculty is able to offer supervision for PhD students in most areas of health and social care.

Foundation Degree Courses:
The Faculty of Health and Social Care has developed a range of work-based Foundation Degrees in partnership with the NHS, social care and voluntary organisations. Students are generally sponsored by their employers and undertake 6 x 20 credits modules at level 4 and 6 at level 5. Some modules are taught in the University and others are learned in the workplace with support from academic staff and workplace supervisors.  Within the NHS setting the achievement of one of these awards may lead to Assistant Practitioner status.

Non-award Bearing Programmes:
The Faculty acknowledges that individuals do not always wish to study for an academic award and emploPicture of University degree courses in Kent, England UKyers may require training for their staff.  We are able to deliver training programmes on topics of interest in health and social care; both clinical and professional, such as leadership. We can also ‘quality mark’ existing courses offered by organisations.
