The Masters School, New York:
The Masters School is a co-educational day and boarding school that engages 5th-12th grade students in a rigorous college preparatory curriculum with boarding beginning in the 9th grade. Located on a majestic 96-acre suburban campus in Dobbs Ferry in Westchester County, we are just 35 minutes from New York City. The Masters School is a vibrant and diverse learning community with more than 550 students from around the country and the world. With over 131 years of history and tradition, we continually draw upon the values and experiences of those who came before us to forge an ever stronger school for today and tomorrow.
Middle School:
Academic Challenge Education is more than a transfer of knowledge—It is a process in which young people grow as committed and capable learners. In our small classes, teachers form close, positive relationships with their students and challenge them to build vital reading, writing, and computational skills. Students emerge with the ability and confidence to succeed at the highly interactive and intellectually demanding Harkness tables of the Upper School.
We teach all academic subjects in single gender classrooms in grades six to eight, providing an optimum learning environment for boys and girls. In fifth grade, children join in a highly interactive coeducational learning experience. Beyond the classroom, all students enjoy the social and developmental benefits of a coed campus.
Faculty team-up to teach a comprehensive academic program around a central theme: the ancient world in fifth grade, Hudson River in sixth grade, diversity and identity in seventh grade, and the American experience in eighth grade. They weave together topics in English, history, math, science, technology, and the arts, to create an interdisciplinary dynamic while teaching the reading, writing, and computational skills needed to succeed in the Upper School.
The Upper School:
Classes take place around oval Harkness tables, engaging every student in an interactive learning experience. Discussions demand daily preparation, participation, and a respect for diverse viewpoints. A wide range of required, elective, and advanced placement courses, give students the intellectual tools and verbal and study skills necessary to succeed in college and in life.
Our co-curricular program enables students to develop talents in many areas from ballet to sculpture, from athletics to filmmaking. Weekends offer exciting options: sports events, dorm challenges, and dances, as well as faculty-led trips to Manhattan.
Students are invited to understand the world’s major faiths, refine their ethical decision making skills, and serve others. An array of community service opportunities enables students to demonstrate their values and grow in insight and compassion.
Arts:
Art is a common language that unites The Masters School community. Our outstanding faculty guide students in the use of artistic media to express their thoughts of the heart, mind, and imagination. We offer a range of courses and are committed to individual attention that provides a safe environment for beginners—and challenges experienced students to achieve their full potential.
Our students create, practice, display, perform, and find their voices as artists and prepare for a lifetime of appreciation and fulfillment. Our alumnae/i often pursue advanced arts studies in college, and many have become accomplished professional dancers, musicians, actors, and visual artists.
Athletics Program:
The Masters School’s comprehensive and inclusive athletics program teaches lifelong lessons in teamwork, sportsmanship, and the importance of physical fitness. Interscholastic competition fosters cooperation and personal bonds among teammates.
Under the guidance of experienced coaches, our student-athletes grow in physical strength and skill, while they learn what it means to win with grace, concede defeat with honor, and come back with tenacity.
We have dozens of teams so students of all interests and abilities can participate in sports, taste the excitement of competition, and reach new peaks of athletic achievement. The spirited support of fellow students, parents, and faculty is fully felt at sports events.
