International House Milan: Located in the centre of Milan in Northern Italy, IH Milan offers the internationally recognised CELTA course. Classes are taught according to IH World’s rigorous and industry-wide recognised high standards. The CELTA course is pre-service so it is primarily aimed at people with little or no teaching experience. It is also suitable for teachers who have teaching experience but who have had little or no formal training. It is considered to be a solid foundation for teaching English as a foreign language. The course is recognised by EFL organisations worldwide and the certificate is the most highly respected of its kind in the world. Candidates must be at least 18 years old. The course is open to native and non-native speakers of English but applicants must have an awareness of language and a competence in English, both written and spoken, that enables them to follow the course and teach English.
CELTA Certificate: The length of the course is 120 contact hours. In order to pass, candidates are required to:
* Complete 6 hours of teaching practice * Observe 6 hours of lessons taught by experienced teachers * Maintain and submit a portfolio of course work which includes details of all lessons taught together with 4 written assignments
The course covers the following syllabus: * Language Analysis and Awareness * The Learner, the Teacher and the Learning/Teaching Context * Planning for Effective Teaching * Classroom Management Skills * Teaching Procedures and Techniques * Resources and Materials * Professional Development * Classroom Observation * Teaching Practice
Teaching Practice (TP): An integral part of the course, TP is undertaken in small groups of 5-6 trainees with volunteer students at two different levels. A total of 6 hours observed practice is the requirement over the course. Over the course you will teach 2 lessons of 30 minutes, 6 lessons of 40 minutes, and 1 lesson of 60 minutes.
Feedback sessions, led by a course trainer, follow each TP session and are also a key component of the course. Trainees are expected to liaise within their TP groups outside of course hours in order to plan teaching practice classes but within the guidelines set by the trainer.
A Typical Day: To give you a flavour of how you might be spending your time on the course, here is an outline of a typical day: 10.00-12.30: Input sessions - methodology and language awareness with workshops and discussions to develop your teaching professionalism
12.30-13.30: Lesson planning (Lesson preparation for TP with your tutor) 13.30-15.00: Lunch 15.00-17.00: Teaching Practice (TP) 17.15-18.30: Feedback and Lesson Planning.
