Special Needs Class
We literally wrote the book on Adaptive Aquatics for the State of Florida’s mandatory on line certification. No one in south Florida has our extensive and successful history teaching special needs children to swim.
Water safety is the BIG ISSUE …Childhood drowning is on the rise in the special needs population. Providing your child with swim lessons is essential to their health and wellness for life.
Our swim lessons offer unique experiences for the special needs child. A child with developmental disabilities and/or physical disabilities will benefit greatly from swim lessons. Opportunity exists for fine and gross motor skill acquisition, strengthening of the body core, legs and arms, social/communication skills as well as fun and relaxation.
Parents and caregivers of children with special needs can look to United States Swim Academy for expert advice and instruction for their child.
We offer a variety classes for your child both private and group. When possible we will mainstream your child into our regular class schedule. When this is not possible we have a strong preference for swim lesson taught in small groups with parents. Over the years we have found the children in small parent/child groups gain water skills quickly and the experience is a happy one for both the parent and child. In fact most of our special needs parent/child groups keep within a lesson or two of the typical child’s swim progress.
ADHD - Michael Phelps highlighted how ideal swimming can be for those managing ADHD. Swimming provides a purely athletic environment where the child is challenged physically.
Autism - especially good. The muffled sound and light that accompanies being underwater make children with autism love swimming. While other children wrestle with trust issues to successfully put their face in the water, autistic children master this skill almost immediately.
