Durban Language Centre (DLC) provides specialised English language courses and language teacher training in Durban city, in KwaZulu-Natal province on the east coast of South Africa. Part-time, full-time & weekend courses are available for adults (18+). DLC caters for adults learning English from South Africa and abroad. We offer top-quality English language classes at all levels, from beginner to advanced. We pride ourselves in making language learning fun, using effective teaching techniques and maintaining high standards of professionalism.
- General English language courses: These are for Elementary, Pre Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate or Advanced students. DLC uses the “Communicative Method” of language teaching. This means that grammar is taught every day, but the new language is practised with a focus on real communication. Each day you can expect to: revise and learn a new language item, revise and learn new vocabulary, practice speaking and use listening and reading skills. Writing tasks are usually set for homework in order to maximize valuable class-time.
- Exam Preparation courses including: IELTS preparation course, medical board exams, international job placement tests, or emigration to Australia and New Zealand.
IELTS Preparation Course: The IELTS exam is a prestigious, internationally recognised 
exam run by the British Council & Cambridge University. The IELTS Exam is divided into 4 sections: speaking, writing, reading and listening. We recommend that candidates allow enough time to prepare for all four sections, however first language speakers of English can do a short workshop which provides an overview of the exam and some useful tips.
- Business English language classes: DLC uses the “Communicative Method” of language teaching. This means that grammar is taught every lesson, but the new language is practised with a focus on real communication. All new material is dealt with in a business context. Each class you can expect to: revise and learn a new language items, revise and learn new vocabulary, practice speaking and use listening and reading skills. - Academic English language course: This course prepares studen
ts for Academic study at English institutions. Whether you are doing your first degree or a post-graduate course, we can help you achieve better results. Students need to be Intermediate level or above to enroll for Academic English classes. The Academic programme covers a variety of reading skills (skimming, scanning & reading for a detailed understanding), expanding your useful vocabulary, discussing opinions with confidence and listening more effectively in lectures & note-taking.
- Aviation English language course: Prepare for the International TEA exam (Test of English for Aviation) at Durban Language Centre. Exams can be booked for you at a local airport only 20 mins away.The Aviation English course aims to prepare pilots to communicate better with air-traffic control and on-board crew in emergency situations. Some of the topics include: incursions on the runaway, fire on the plane, medical emergencies and extreme weather conditions.
- We also offer specialised teacher training courses: Cambridge CELTA and TEFL.

We are situated on the foreshore in Cape Town, near the CBD. With a maximum of only 7 students in each English course, the teacher can give each student sufficient attention and solve individual language problems. We have recently moved into our new premises, a beautiful, large Victorian house, with a lovely outdoor area and a swimming pool. The classrooms have been beautifully appointed and modern audio visual teaching materials are used. The school is now situated in Green Point - a very popular part of Cape Town on the Atlantic Coast. Green Point hosts a great variety of restaurants and pubs. The school building is a few minutes walk from the beachfront and the ever bustling Waterfront can be reached within 5 minutes on foot. Our classes are dynamic, multicultural and fun with students from all over the world. Most of our students are between 18 - 35, and come from Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, Poland and Japan - but we have many students from other countries such as Angola, Zaire and Brazil.
