The Hollywood Schoolhouse, Los Angeles:
The Hollywood Schoolhouse is a private school centrally located in the heart of Hollywood in Los Angeles, serving preschool through to 8th grade. We have been educating children since 1945. The Hollywood Schoolhouse does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, religion, ethnicity, national origin, culture, religion, family structure, sexual orientation, financial resources or disability. The school's close-knit community continues to nurture these students even while providing them the encouragement they need to develop into mature young adults. In a world that does much to promote conformity, our children attend school with a collage of individuals, in a setting that encourages and nurtures appropriate individual expression.

Education Programs (Preschool through Grade 8)

Early Childhood Education / Preschool Programs
:
Photo of Private Preschool / School in Hollywood, Los AngelesEvery day, our experienced, nurturing staff welcome the children into a warm, creative, hands-on environment. We believe in educating the whole child . We feel that an environment that explores the social, emotional, intellectual and physical development of each child is one that encourages a child's ability to grow.

At the Schoolhouse, we use a hands-on multi-sensory approach to learning. We strongly believe it has to be in the hand before it gets to the brain. We believe that child-initiated, child-directed , teacher-supported play is an essential component of developmentally appropriate curriculum.

Elementary and Middle School Programs:
Programs at the Hollywood Schoolhouse provides for continued academic growth through a departmentalized curriculum, and foster the ongoing development of individual responsibility for a smooth transition into High School. Children are given a strong academic foundation with a carefully planned sequence of study.
* Language Arts:
The Language Arts curriculum consists of reading, writing, listening and speaking. At each grade level we foster a love for reading by encouraging students to be insightful readers and by exposing them to a variety of genres. Children are inspired to stretch themselves in their reading selections and explore areas of interest.

Teachers choose reading selections that pique children’s iImage of Private Preschool / School in Hollywood, Los Angelesnterest and imagination, complement the curriculum, and place an emphasis on the gender, ethnicity, and social diversity of our student body. Children are encouraged to predict, discuss issues, interpret, respond to, make conclusions, discuss, summarize, and write reading responses. * Math:
In our mathematics program, students are encouraged to apply mathematical principals to real life, practical situations. When presented with problems, students are asked to strategize, develop, and share their reasoning and solution strategies. This problem solving approach, along with mathematical reasoning, a strong conceptual foundation, and a hands-on approach to learning mathematical concepts, helps in each child’s development.

A spiral approach to learning is used. Skills that are acquired are revisited and applied on an ongoing basis. Students strive for a mastery of basic skills and receive much benefit from the problem solving, hands-on approach to learning mathematical concepts.* Social Studies:
Across all grade levels, social studies concepts are integrated into the curriculum. Students explore interrelated topics that meet and exceed the requirements of the California State Framework. Many of the themes are related to our own Los Angeles community and the diversity of the student body.

Students are encouraged to explore different points of view and respect the various influences that have shaped our world. Students also enjoy the many project based activities and fieldtrips that have been incorporated into our social studies curriculum.* Science:
In our science program, students experience physical, earth and life sciences. Teachers use a hands-on, project-based approach to learning science. Students use their experiences to observe, infer, and evaluate the scientific process. Students enjoy and benefit from regular visits from our science specialist or from trips to ouPhotos of The Hollywood Schoolhouse, Los Angelesr science lab and community garden. * Spanish:
Every student takes Spanish. Two times a week in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten and three times a week in grades 1-5. Spanish is spoken almost exclusively during the class so that students will become actively involved in using the language from the start. The goal of the course is not to teach students fluency in Spanish, but to familiarize them with the language, culture and customs of Spanish-speaking people.

Students will learn to use Spanish just as they learned to use English when they were very young. Ideally, students will develop an interest in foreign language for future language study and will develop a positive attitude toward learning another language.* Computer:
The Schoolhouse offers the opportunity for daily computer experience in the classroom with a network and printer in each room. Children in the early education center, jr. kindergarten and kindergarten use computers to explore educational software as they learn letters and numbers.

Children in the upper grades (1 and up) learn basic keyboarding and project-based lessons that allow them to become thoroughly familiar with using computers for homework, special projects and beyond the classroom. Teachers also make use of email to communicate with parents, other classes and share student projects.* Art:
The goal for our students is to expose them to as many quality art experiences as possible. In these classes they explore and create visual forms and cultivate the beginnings of an aesthetic sense. The students work in many mediums, including clay, papier-mache, plaster of Paris, pen and ink, crayons, water colors, and paint. Art history and art terminology are interwoven within the program.
* Music:
The Music program is based on things children like to do: sing, chant rhymes, clap, dance, and keep a beat on anything near at hand. These instincts are directed into learning music by hearing and making music first, then reading and writing it later, which is the same way we all learned our language.
* Performance:
Creative drama is an encompassing learning medium, emerging from the spontaneous play of young children and utilizing the art of theatre to build and enhance the participants' artistic sensitivity, awareness of self, others, and the world and develop each child's dramatic imagination. Creative drama is a specific type of dramatic learning activity that is guided by a leader and allows the participants to imagine, enact, and reflect upon human experiences, real or imagined.

* Summer Camp:
We offer exciting summer camps with field trips from end of June til mid August each summer.
