About Us:

Photo of Montessori Preschool & Elementary School in Louisville KYFounded in 1967, Hayfield Montessori was one of the first Montessori schools in Kentucky and was only one of three elementary Montessori Schools in the United States. Hayfield is a private, non-denominational school which is open to all and welcomes children from different races, creeds and nationalities. Hayfield currently offers preschool, kindergarten and elementary grades 1-5.

With an enrollment of 100+ students, Hayfield is a community that offers a truly unique educational experience for each child. Hayfield Montessori School promotes learning for life by allowing children to joyfully progress at their own pace. The Montessori Method acknowledges each child's distinct gifts and needs. A peaceful child knows how to live and work and cooperate in harmony with others.

Montessori Method:
Montessori is a very individualized approach to learning. Most lessons are given one-on-one, and this enables each child to progress at his/her own pace and level of ability. Montessori materials incorporate the child's senses in the learning process. Materials in the classroom are for manipulating as we believe a child learns by doing.

There is a direct hand to brain connection in the young child that is nurtured in a Montessori environment. Many Montessori materials also incorporate a control of error which enables students to correct their own mistakes without adult intervention. Children in a Montessori classroom gain independence and develop responsibility toward themselves and their environment.

A Montessori child is a well-rounded individual whose social skills are nurtured as much as his/her academic skills. Children in a Montessori school enjoy the freedom to learn in a friendly, peaceful environment in which no child gets lost in the crowd.

Why Montessori?

According to the International Montessori Index, studies show that Montessori children are well prepared for later life academically, socially and emotionally. In addition to scoring well on standardized tests, Montessori children rank above average on such criteria as following directions, turning in work on-time, listening attentively, using basic skills, showing responsibility, asking provocative questions, showing enthusiasm for learning and adapting to new situations.

Hayfield Montessori School divides students into the following groups:
- 3-6 year olds (preschool)
- 6-11 year olds (elementary)

The ideal age for enrollment in the preschool is between 3.0 and 3.6 years old, depending on the maturity of the child. Observing our students at work and play speaks for itself.
