Throughout its history, Walford Anglican School for Girls has been recognised as a leader in the education of girls. Located five kilometres from the centre of Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, we provide a rigorous academic program including a broad range of SACE (South Australian Certificate of Education) and IB (International Baccalaureate) subjects at Years 11 and 12. Walford is the only girls' school in Australia to offer all three IB programs across the years including the IB Diploma. Walford offers a wide range of boarding options. Although most boarding students enjoy full-time boarding, flexible boarding arrangements are available. Weekday boarding is available to students who wish to stay in the boarding house from Monday to Friday but go home for the weekends. This is the choice of many girls who live in closer proximity to the school or to assist parents who have demanding work schedules.

Why choose a Girls´ School:

Photo of Boarding school for girls in Adelaide, South AustraliaExcellent girls' schools continue to be in the press not only because they are producing students who gain outstanding academic success, but also because their girls become strong, confident, women.

New scientific methods which allow us a greater understanding of how the brain functions, explain why girls learn best at schools like Walford. Dr Leonard Sax summarises this clearly in his new book, "Why Gender Matters".

In girls and boys the brain develops differently. In girls, the language area of the brain generally develops quicker than the sections used for spatial relations. It is important to realise this when teaching, for example, geometry.

Girls, in a very different way to boys, process emotion in the same location as language and are more easily able to express their feelings from an early age. They often find the study of literature easy.

Teenage girls have a sense of hearing seven times acuter than teenage boys. This means that girls can be easily upset by shouting. However, probably more significant is the fact that boys and girls do respond to stress differently. Stress impairs learning amongst girls whereas boys tend to respond to stress by mastering the problem or learning.

Rochester Independent College
Courses / Programs
Located in the County of Kent, just east of London, Rochester Independent College (RIC) is a progressive alternative to conventional secondary education with a happily distinctive ethos.

Accepting day students from the age of 11 and boarders from 16, the focus is on exam success in a lively, supportive and informal atmosphere. Students are encouraged to be themselves and achieve exam results that often exceed their expectations.

The College has an atmosphere closer to university than school. About 65 of the College's 280 students are boarders. Our Halls combine the informality of a university residence with the supervision and pastoral support appropriate for young adults.

The College offers students the opportunity to thrive in an atmosphere of managed independence, and acts as a stepping stone between school and university.

Students who are 15 are considered if their 16th birthday falls within the first half term of the academic year. College accommodation is in either single or double rooms. All rooms have a direct telephone and internet connection.

RIC is accredited by the ISC (Independent Schools Council) and a member of the Independent Schools Association.
