Primary & Secondary School Day & Boarding Programmes:

Photo of Day & Boarding School in West Midlands, UKOswestry School aims to enable each individual to achieve their potential. Progress and achievement is carefully monitored in small tutor groups. Excellent teaching delivered by highly qualified and experienced teaching staff is allied to an effective tutorial programme and provides a sound preparation for university life.

In the Sixth Form most students study three A levels. Students may, of course, study up to four A level subjects if this is appropriate and desirable.

Subjects include art, biology, business studies, chemistry, computing, design and technology, economics, English and English Literature, French, geography, history, mathematics and further mathematics, music, physical education, philosophy of religion and ethics, photography, physics, psychology, Spanish and textiles.

English Literature
Photos of Oswestry School, ShropshireAt Oswestry School the study of English Literature is a wide ranging, thought provoking and challenging A level. The study of English Literature requires more direct input from the students, a greater level of wider reading and allows development of comprehensive written and spoken communication skills and reasoned argument. The rewards for our A level students are all the greater as not only do they enrich their knowledge of the Literary Heritage but prepare themselves for their future University Careers.

Maths
The study of Mathematics is generally undertaken by students who enjoy the unique aspects of this subject: the disciplined approach to problem solving, mathematical modeling of real life problems and the development of new, more precise mathematical methods. It is clearly beneficial to all students embarking on science or related subjects at A level. It can be successfully combined with a wide variety of other subjects but some students find it more difficult if they are not using their maths skills in other disciplines.

Biology

Knowledge of the life sciences is essential for an understanding of our bodies and the way they work; the issues of world health, disease and medicine; nutrition, farming and the food chain; reproduction, the modern methods of contraception and assisted fertility; the impending crisis of overpopulation and the current mass extinction of the Earth’s biodiversity; the interaction of genetics and environment on the development of our personalities and talents, DNA technology and the potential of the human genome project to improve our lives in the future.

Business Studies
Image of Day & Boarding School in West Midlands, UKBusiness Studies is a subject which will link equally well with either the Arts or the Sciences. It is eclectic as there are many disciplines that need to be studied by serious and committed students to develop the necessary investigative and problem-solving approach. As well as understanding the internal workings of firms and organisations students are encouraged to be aware of the perspective of a range of stakeholders. They also need to demonstrate an understanding of the economic, environmental, ethical and international issues which arise in the processes of business behaviour and to be able to interpret and evaluate the significance of these issues.

Art and Design
The department encourages pupils to explore their creativity in fine art, drawing and painting, ceramics, textiles, photography and sculpture. There are teaching rooms dedicated to the specialist teaching in these areas and a gallery for visiting exhibitions.

The art and design course provides the opportunity of personal expression, analytical reasoning and self-directed learning. We offer a full range of trips including the galleries of London, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and a European study tour.
