Bard College:
Bard College, located in Annandale-on-Hudson (90 miles north of New York City), New York, is a small four-year liberal arts college offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Choice, flexibility, and rigor are the hallmarks of the Bard education, which is a transformative synthesis of the liberal arts and progressive education traditions. Bard students are expected to shape the subject matter of their education by the exercise of imagination and intellectual engagement.
Since its founding in 1860, Bard College has maintained a firm commitment to the liberal arts and sciences education along with a readiness to innovate that has enhanced the undergraduate experience with compatible intellectual and artistic ventures at its Hudson Valley campus and at affiliated institutions around the world. Bard seeks to provide a challenging academic program; a supportive environment that fosters a collaborative interchange of ideas in the classroom, studio, and laboratory, as well as the ambition to achieve excellence; and access to world-class scholarship and research.
Faculty:
The faculty-to-student ratio is 1:9 and courses are taught by full faculty members. Among the many distinguished faculty at Bard College are five MacArthur Fellows—poets John Ashbery and Ann Lauterbach, novelist and memoirist Norman Manea, painter and multimedia artist Judy Pfaff, and journalist Mark Danner. Other notable faculty members include soprano Dawn Upshaw, novelist Chinua Achebe, historian and novelist Caleb Carr, journalist Ian Buruma, theatrical director JoAnne Akalaitas, composers Joan Tower and George Tsontakis, poet Robert Kelly, and writers Luc Sante and Francine Prose. Over the years, four recipients of the Nobel Prize in Literature have taught at Bard—Saul Bellow, Isaac Bashevis Singer, José Saramago, and Orhan Pamuk.
Accreditation:
Bard College is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The courses of study leading to the bachelor of arts and bachelor of music degrees at Bard are registered by the New York State Education Department. The programs of study leading to the master of arts, master of fine arts, master of music, and master of science in environmental policy degrees and the doctor of philosophy degree in the history of the decorative arts, design, and culture at Bard are registered by the New York State Education Department, Office of Higher Education and the Professions.
