Hargrave Military Academy, Chatham:
Located in Chatham, Pittsylvania County, southern Virginia, Hargrave Military Academy is a college preparatory secondary boy’s military boarding school for grades 7-12 and one post graduate year with college prep SAT, ACT and AP courses. Established in 1909, Hargrave has a long history of providing quality education to our students, not only in the classroom, but in the areas of character development, leadership, socially, spiritually and athletically. This basic concept enables young men to maximize their full potential. A Hargrave student is held to a much higher standard.

The mission of Hargrave is to assist cadets in becoming knowledgeable, thinking, and responsible citizens of their community, nation, and world. Our educational program is based on rigorous instruction in basic skills and in preparation for further study in arts and sciences.

To be effective, the educational process must be reinforced by order, structure, and discipline, and in an environment where the worth, potential and integrity of the individual is promoted in every area of school life.

We strive to develop our students spiritually, socially, emotionally, and physically, as well as intellectually, within a healthy, wholesome environment in which the Christian faith and principles pervade all aspects of the school.

Hargrave Military Academy is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS). Hargrave is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and The National Association of Boarding Schools (TABS).

Academy provides a safe learning and boarding environment with modern dorm facilities, dining and infirmary services. The daily structure provides a higher level of accountability and responsibility that is not present today.

International Students:
Hargrave’s international students enjoy tremendous opportunities at the Academy. The Academy’s college preparatory academic focus and strong emphasis on English as a Second Language creates a perfect learning environment for the foreign student.

A further unique mix of military structure, sports and leadership provide additional opportunities for a well-rounded and successful high school education.

Host Families
Volunteer American host families from the Hargrave Community are provided to ease the international student’s adjustment into American culture. These families keep contact with the cadet throughout the school year, provide emotional support and include him in home visits and outings during open weekends.

Free time at Hargrave is precious. After a typical week of academics, sports, military and study hall commitments, most Cadets are ready for a little R&R by the weekend.

While busy weeks are often mandated by the Hargrave daily schedule, Cadets experience freedom of choice during their down time. A Cadet may choose to participate in an official Hargrave activities, such as paintball, ski trips, whitewater trips and other adventures; they can focus on outings with teachers and staff; journey with a friend’s family off campus; or simply hangout on campus with friends.

Student Activities works very hard to ensure moral and a positive focus is maintain by the Cadets while they are focused on their individual goals at the Academy.
