Our History:

The School has an 1,100 acre main campus in Colorado Springs and a 40-acre Mountain Campus near Buena Vista, CO.

FVS Campus and Facilities:
FVS has an 1,100-acre main campus in Colorado Springs and a 40-acre Mountain Campus near Buena Vista, Colo. On the main campus, the Froelicher Academic Building has 27 classrooms, a Learning Center and two computer labs, including one with new iMacs. A state-of-the-art science facility has five teaching labs.

The "Art Barn" houses visual arts studios for ceramics, jewelry-making, print-making, sculpture, painting and photography, along with offices for the student yearbook and newspaper. The Hawley Library has a collection of more than 20,000 books, and other buildings include the dining room, music room, campus center and performing arts center.

The Penrose Sports Complex has a gymnasium, squash courts, weight room, climbing wall and swimming pool. New athletic facilities include a magnificent indoor riding arena and outdoor track. The School's four residence halls include 10 indivudal houses.

Student Body:

Image of Boarding High School in Colorado, USAFVS currently enrolls 250 students from 27 states and 11 countries, including Canada, China, Germany, Guatemala, Japan, Lithuania, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Sweden and Thailand.

Twenty-one percent of students reside outside the United States, 31% are students of color, and there is an even 50-50 split between boys and girls.

Faculty:
Faculty at FVS are more than just teachers; they are coaches, houseparents, advisers and mentors. There are 40 total teaching faculty for student-faculty ratio of 6:1, and there are 35 full-time teaching faculty.

Seventy percent of the full-time faculty hold advanced degrees; 30 live on campus, with 13 in residence halls; 34 are advisers and 25 are coaches.

Afternoon Program/Athletics:

All students are required to participate in the afternoon program, which includes interscholastic sports, outdoor education, equestrian training (English and Western), skiing and theater.

Freshmen are required to compete in at least two interscholastic sports, and sophomores must compete in at least one. Those sports include basketball (boys and girls), cross country (boys and girls), field hockey (girls), golf (boys), ice hockey (boys), lacrosse (boys and girls), track and field (boys and girls), soccer (boys and girls), swimming (girls), tennis (boys and girls) and volleyball (boys and girls).

Unique Programs:

The Western Immersion Program (WIP) isa signature interdisciplinary program for sophomores. WIP explores how the Western landscape shaped the people, history and culture of the region.

The Interim Program, held each March, provides students with the opportunity to expand their intellectual, cultural and social horizons beyond the classroom. The weeklong program is curriculum based and has included such activities as kayaking in George and learning about Chinese culture while in Beijing.

Senior Seminar
has the senior class ending its time at FVS working together on a project designed to promote ecological awareness and to make a lasting contribution to the School or community.

Students in outdoor education can participate in climbing and skiing/snowboard, or climb "fourteeners" in the Rockies. The Student Life Curriculum helps students develop an appreciation for giving to others and learn about leadership.

Provo Canyon School
Courses / Programs
Provo Canyon School has been providing mental health care for boys and girls ages 12-17 for nearly 40 years. We are one of the nation’s largest and most experienced treatment facilities for youth.

Provo Canyon School’s alumni and friends are its largest source of referrals, and our caring professionals operate in a unique environment which helps make a positive difference in a teenager’s life.

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools (NAAS) has endorsed the school. The National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP) is also an associate of the school. We have a 242-bed facility with two different campus sites for boys and girls.

Provo is the location of the boy's campus; the girl's campus is situated at Orem. We provide services to students who are between the ages of 11 and 17 years of age (7th to 12th graders) with a variety of different clinical needs.

The average length of stay for a Provo Canyon School student is 10 months, however this can vary considerably depending on the clinical issues of the student. All of our teachers are special education certified.
Academic Programs for 7th to 12th Graders:

- Our fully accredited program and small class sizes are designed to meet each child's individual needs and to facilitate the ability to work with learning differences.

- We offer comprehensive academic programs with over 140 different academic classes taught within an 8:1 ratio.

- Our Early Adolescent Program is designed to meet the unique developmental needs of boys ages 12 to 14.
Turning Winds Academic Institute (TWAI)

Located in northwestern Montana, Turning Winds Academic Institute (TWAI) is an accredited, family-run, therapeutic boarding school for troubled teens (boys and girls) ages 13-18 from Colorado and across the United States.

In our beautiful, peaceful, and safe location, we combine the benefits of a therapeutic boarding school, a wilderness program, and a residential treatment center (RTC).

TWAI has been serving struggling teens and their families since 2002, with an exceptional degree of success.

We provide an extremely high standard of therapeutic treatment to our students, and offer help for the following presenting issues: poor academic performance, behavioral problems, addictions, low self-worth, spectrum disorders, ADD/ADHD, and attachment disorders among others.

With a passion for helping young people in crisis, our clinical, educational, and operations staff are among the best in the country.

We are a small program (40 students) which means that we are able to provide a truly unique and customized approach for every student.

Typically our on site student to staff ratio is 5:1. The average stay at our residential treatment center is 12 months.

TWAI graduates average a 3.5 GPA. It is common for a student to complete 1.5 years of course work in 1 year.

Thunderbird Youth Academy
Courses / Programs
Located in the city of Pryor, Northeastern Oklahoma, Thunderbird Youth Academy is a nationally-recognized co-ed program designed for high school dropouts ages 16-18.

Our 17-month program is offered through the National Guard and the Oklahoma Military Department. Our program comprises of a 22 week (5 1/2 month) Residential Phase followed by a 12 month Post-Residential follow up program with a mentor after graduation.

Thunderbird Youth Academy Cadets will earn 3 high school credits for graduating the program. These 3 credits have been assigned to the 8 core components that make up the core curriculum at TYA.

Students can also participate in the academy’s job shadowing programs, observing and interning in different career fields to gather ideas for future employment.

Arivaca Boys Ranch Academy
Courses / Programs
The Arivaca Boys Ranch is a 10-month boarding school program specifically designed to therapeutically help troubled teenage boys throughout the Southwest. Situated in Arivaca AZ, 60 miles south of Tucson, the ranch serves 40-50 boys, ages 14 to 18, on a 23,000 acre, 140-year-old ranch.

At our ranch, using horses as a therapeutic tool (equine therapy), each boy has the opportunity to experience the rewards of hard work and ranch life while continuing his high school education.

We have a full academic program, 24/7 care, as well as our unique and effective 3-tiered therapy. If your son/loved one struggles with school, is defiant, has ADD or ADHD, is experimenting with drugs, stealing and lying, then you may need our help.

Through hard work, responsibility, communication and healthy relationships, on our boys ranch we teach boys how to resolve their most troubling conflicts the right way. We teach them a different way of being, a way out of conflict and turmoil through making better choices.
