The Art Center of Northern New Jersey in New Milford (20 miles from NYC), is an accredited Fine Arts School & Gallery providing children and adults a nurturing environment for developing skills & enjoying the creative arts. The Art Center aims to be accessible to all, including the disadvantaged & the disabled. It seeks to – Build a strong base of understanding & appreciation for the arts; provide professional-level instruction; sponsor programs for cultural advancement & personal growth and open its facilities to the community.
History & Ongoing Growth:
The Art Center Of Northern New Jersey was established in Englewood, NJ in 1957 by a group of Artists and interested lay people who wanted professional art training in the northern NJ area. With help from the Museum of Modern Art, it quickly became an acclaimed school with classes taught by the recognized artists. Ten years later the Art Center moved to Tenafly, NJ and moved again in1984 to its current location in New Milford where it continues to offer classes in the fine arts from the kindergarten ages to senior citizens, amateurs and professionals.
Accreditation:
Classes are accredited by the New Jersey department of education as continuing education credits for professional development for art teachers.
Our Studios:
- Our main painting studio is large & on the days it’s full it can take up to 15 artists comfortably, with enough place for their easles, work tables & the platform for the model (if required).
- The Stone Sculpture studio in our basement level is an easy accesss for carrying large stone & wood pieces to be carved. The studio is has all the basic power & hand work tools, required for carving & shaping.
- Our Printmaking studio is equipped with the 3 large printing presses for intaglio process, a dark room for photolitho printing, printers, scanners, large work tables, rollers, washing area & storage areas for large files & prints.

Transart Institute, Manhattan

Founded in 2004 by two artists, the Transart Institute in Manhattan, NYC is an art school that provides a contemporary learning experience without grades or pre-formatted curricula. We offer an international low-residency Master of Fine Arts (MFA) and a practice-based PhD program for working artists in a highly individualized format. Our students are generally working professionals with wider world experience than students from a serial undergraduate/graduate course of study. The low-residency approach, with intensive residencies, gives our students the opportunity for deeper academic experiences than within a traditional full residency context.
The innovative MFA program consists of three intensive summer residencies with lectures, workshops, critiques, seminars, performances and exhibitions in Europe and two fall residencies in New York. In the four semesters between residencies, students create their own course of study realizing individual art and research projects with the support of faculty and self-chosen artist mentors wherever they work and live.
The MPhil/PhD is a three to four year full time degree program with an average work commitment of 30 hours per week. The Degree is only offered for practice-based research (creative work) accompanied by a written thesis that contextualizes the work.

Jersey City Art School at the Thomas John Carlson Art Studio in downtown Jersey City is a visual art school offering classes taught by local artists, weekly figure drawing sessions and lectures by artists showing locally. The Jersey City Art School was founded in November, 2009 by Thomas John Carlson. The first classes that were offered were: Introduction to Painting and Drawing and Introduction to Stained Glass. Following on from our initial success, we have extended our classes to include 8-week courses in drawing, painting, stained glass and figure sculpture.
