Musicians Institute’s challenging Bachelor of Music in Performance (Contemporary Styles) is a unique degree program combining contemporary music performance with rigorous training in traditional music disciplines. The twelve-quarter, 180 credit-unit curriculum emphasizes the development of stylistic depth, creative maturity and professional competence as part of a comprehensive college education preparing students to enter the contemporary music industry. Upon completion of all requirements, students are eligible to receive the Bachelor of Music in Performance (Contemporary Styles) in Guitar, Bass, Drum Set, Keyboard or Voice.

Additional options for study include:

BM-Performance (Minor in Music Industry Studies)
Combines the major in Performance for Guitar, Bass, Drum Set, Keyboard or Voice with 30 units of study in the business side of the music industry, including record company management, artist management, publishing, and marketing & distribution. Total program length is 193-201 units depending on instrument.

BM-Performance (Minor in Audio Production)
Combines the major in Performance for Guitar, Bass, Drum Set, Keyboard or Voice with 30 units of study in audio production, including software-based recording, large analog consoles, tracking, mixing, mastering and more. Total program length is 193-201 units depending on instrument.

Associate of Arts in Performance Degrees
MI’s 90-credit-unit, six-quarter Associate of Arts in Performance Degrees provide the instrument skills, musical knowledge and performing exImage of Music Programs in Los Angeles, Californiaperience that musicians need to prepare for the challenges of professional and creative contemporary performing careers.

AA-Performance Degrees are available for bass, guitar, keyboards, drum set and voice. Students may also earn an AA-Performance (Combined Emphasis) degree by combining any instrument emphasis with specialized studies in one of the following areas:

Indigital Institute of Recording Arts (IIRA) provides an 18-month certified Audio Engineering and Beat Production program that consists of over 70 lessons. Students can take the program in-full, or concentrate on one of the 6-month individual certifications - Recording Engineering, Mixing, or Beat Production.

Based in Santa Cruz CA, approximately 30 miles south of San Jose and 75 miles south of San Francisco, IIRA is designed to give students the essential knowledge for building a career in today's music industry. IIRA programs give you the skills you need, without the enormous tuition costs of some recording schools.

Each class provides immediate hands-on training in real professional studios, student labs, class interaction studies, and apprenticeships during actual paid recording sessions. The IIRA is your recording industry connection to place yourself in today's music industry.

Conveniently located at the corner of Market and Powell in downtown San Francisco, The College of Extended Learning at San Francisco State University provides a variety of music business and recording industry classes which are open to everyone. You can select any class that interests you, or follow our Music/Recording Industry academic certificate program. Our downtown campus is directly on the Powell Street BART and Muni lines, and close to affordable parking.

Designed for students who want to gain a solid foundation in the music business and/or recording industry, this program offers a comprehensive education in all aspects of the music business. Students choose an emphasis on either the recording arts/technology or the music business, which enables them to acquire real marketable skills to compete successfully in a fiercely intense environment.

All certificate students are required to complete a professional internship as well as a portfolio of projects such as audio engineering demos or music business and marketing plans. In addition, students can select from a number of electives and seminars for the most comprehensive music industry education in the San Francisco Bay Area. Coursework in the program may be applied toward the certificate, or individual classes may be taken to learn or update skills.
- Music/Recording Industry (MRI) academic certificate program: Choose an emphasis in either the recording arts/technology or the music business. All students must complete a professional internship.

The program can be completed in as few as two semesters; however, most students take four semesters, or two years. Evening classes are also available.
