Boarding Programs for Boys and Girls in Grades 9-12:
Academics:
As a leading Michigan private school, we know how to prepare you for college. You need to be challenged. You need to pursue your strengths and discover new passions. You need to be in a place that attracts students who want to learn.
You sit with fifteen classmates to discuss your analysis of feminist theory and Hamlet. You gain fascinating insight from your friends – who come from all over the world. You use your free period to prepare for a test in AP Physics. You are involved in athletic activities, play the trumpet and write for The Crane-Clarion, our student newspaper.
English:
The English Department at Cranbrook Kingswood is comprised of highly motivated, well-educated individuals who are passionate about literature and language. The varied interests, commitment to professional development, and diverse cultural experiences of the faculty afford our students unique opportunities to learn in an environment that encourages the sharing of ideas.Math (Algebra):
This first-year course in algebra, in addition to including some work with numerical expressions, covers axioms, simple equations, inequalities, absolute value, word problems, functions, graphing linear equations, systems, exponents and radicals, operations with polynomials, and radical expressions.
Science:
The Science Department believes that students should be exposed to a variety of scientific fields of study and should be encouraged to pursue breadth rather than depth of study.
The Physics course taken in the ninth or tenth grade provides students with the fundamental principles and skills which underlie all the sciences. It is a required course in this department. Other science courses needed to satisfy the graduation requirements may be selected according to each person's interests.
Advanced courses are offered in biology, chemistry and physics for those who desire in-depth study. It is highly recommended that all students take at least one semester of a life science: Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Botany, Environmental Science, Genetics.
World History: Intersections Past and Present:
Through examination of their histories, governments, cultures, religions, and economies, students gain an appreciation of a variety of civilizations including the Islamic Empire, Byzantium, China, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Americas and Europe. Through this knowledge, incorporated with current events, students also begin to understand how a civilization's history continues to influence its current path.
Languages:
Students can choose between Spanish, Chinese, French, Italian, German, Latin.
Computer Science:This advanced level course is designed for the student with a strong interest and ability in computer science. The language JAVATM is used exclusively, although a student need not know the language to enroll. Emphasis is placed on programming theory rather than on the language.
Topics covered include searching and sorting routines, data structures, linked lists, trees, and simulations. Students are expected to take the “AB” level Advanced Placement Examination in May. Tests, quizzes.
