International Baccalaureate Diploma Program:
This is a two-year internationally recognized pre-university program with 2 levels. There are three courses taken at the Higher Level, and three at the Standard Level. The aim is to combine a liberal education in a range of disciplines with the opportunity to study a limited number of subjects in depth. Additionally, all students follow a common course in the Theory of Knowledge and write an Extended (personal research) Essay of some 4,000 words, which has to be handed in by October of the second year.

In order to obtain the IB Diploma, a student is required to study 6 subjects:
- One core subject from each of the IB Groups 1-5,
- Either: Music or Visual Arts
• Or: a second subject from any of the IB groups 1-4

Students who for good reason need to take Italian as a seventh (or “Certificate”) subject are permitted to take seven courses and seven examinations. It will be noted below that all Diploma students must write an examination in their own language and literature. Students of languages not provided with teachers or mother tongue tutors, take their own language as a “self-taught” subject, under the guidance of the Head of Languages A1.

Additional Extra-curricular Programs:

- The Activities Program:
This is an integral part of college life and aims to use creativity, sport and aesthetic experience as a challenge to personal development. The activities programme is an integral part of College life and seeks to provide: - challenge, both physical and mental; - the opportunity to develop specific skills; - a space for creative expression; - the motivation for physical fitness; - an occasion for practising leadership.

Every student has to choose both a core physical and creative activity. Core activities are led by members of staff or by instructors recruited locally. There are additional activities led and developed by students. Activities take place in the afternoon or evening and students are free to join in any additional activities other than their cores if they wish to.

Physical Activities:
- Outdoors: Climbing, Cross-country Skiing, Downhill Skiing, Hiking, Orienteering; Marine: Kayaking, Sailing;
- Sports: Archery, Basketball, Karate, Road Hockey, Rugby, Softball, Soccer, Swimming, Volleyball, Aerobics, Dance.

- The Community Service Program:
College life is fully integrated into the life of the local community through a range of social and multicultural services carried out by the students. The Community Service Program bears an enormous significance in the life of the college. It is precisely through their community service that college students apply their ideals to everyday life; it is a chance for them to show their commitment to “making the world a better place”, to offer their help to others, regardless of differences.

For its students to make the most of this challenging experience, the college provides a wide variety of opportunities, ranging from social services, to arts, music, and environmental services. None of these are easy, but the rewards may be profound.

- The International Affairs (INA) Program:
The International Affairs (INA) Program at the United World College of the Adriatic is designed to offer students and staff an insight into current issues from around the world and to make them reflect about the challenges of our time.

The INA Programme involves a biweekly speaker series, encompassing academics and international organization professionals, poets, writers and journalists, politicians, diplomats, NGO workers and scientists. Speakers present a topic to the students and staff. The presentation is generally followed by a very interactive question & answer session. The conferences are open to the public upon invitation.

The Bilingual Montessori School of Milan
Courses / Programs
The Bilingual Montessori School of Milan is a preschool for children ages three to six years, located close to the city centre of Milan, Italy. We provide bilingual education to our students: In both classrooms, a team of two teachers, one an Italian speaker and the other an English speaker, collaborate using a bilingual approach to education.

The two teachers take turns with the childrens' activities, while communicating in their native tongues. The bilingual approach is particularly appropriate for a Montessori classroom, where teachers typically emphasize individualized interaction with the students.

The preschool includes two multi-age bilingual Montessori classrooms. The classrooms are designed to provide an accessible, safe and inviting environment for each child. The furniture is child-sized, allowing easy access to a wide range of carefully selected activities around the room. Each child chooses her or his activities freely, feeling safe in the knowledge that the teacher is always nearby and ready to support their efforts.
