General English Courses
In General English, we aim to improve your overall English language skills, giving you the confidence to use the language every day in a variety of situations.
You also have the chance to really focus on your speaking and listening by choosing our unique English Out There™ afternoon option, a task-based programme where students take the language learned in class “out there” into Swansea.
All our courses are lively and fun, but also challenging, because we know that making fast progress is our students’ priority. In our General English courses, we focus on the key areas of: Speaking & listening; Reading; Writing; Grammar
Exam Preparation Courses
Taking an exam after your stay in an English-speaking country is your chance to show what you learnt while you were abroad. So joining one of our Exam Preparation courses really helps you prepare for that test, and achieve your best possible mark.
Choose from:
- IELTS English
- Cambridge ESOL Exams – FCE, CAE, KET and PET
In addition, City School of Languages is an authorised Cambridge English Assesment Centre, so you can take your exams at the school.
Business English Courses
In the modern world of international business, it is important to speak Business English in a way people can understand. English is the international language of business, but alongside it is a specific culture that is equally as important.
At City School of Languages, we offer a Business English course that really focuses on practical language you can use every day at work. In particular, we look at common business scenarios and the language you need to function in them effectively and efficiently.
International Foundation Programme
Studying an IFP is a great way to prepare yourself for undergraduate study at a British university.
At City School of Languages, we work in co-operation with Swansea Metropolitan University (SMU) therefore after successful completion of the IFP, you receive
an internationally-recognised SMU Certificate of Credit and can move into an appropriate first degree at the university.
In addition to SMU, our IFP is highly useful when applying to other universities in other British universities: It helps students get their English to the required level, as well as get ready for their new academic life.
Summer School Swansea
CSL Summer School is a fun and active way to learn English. The focus of the programme is on speaking and listening, with the cultural input being equally as important as the language itself.
The course helps students gain confidence in everyday situations, as well as improve their fluency
in English. We give you the opportunity to practice with fluent or native speakers of English, providing you with an insight into British culture, and giving you a chance to explore Swansea.
The course is designed to run over one to four weeks, with classes from Monday to Friday. Lessons are held at the school in the mornings, and there are 15 hours of class time each week.
In the afternoon, students have a chance to participate in a range of activities in and around Swansea, utilising the language they have learned in the morning. The activities are generally based in busy places where there are lots of people to talk to such as shopping centres, museums and parks, but we also have lots of fun activities such as sports competitions and beach barbeques.
English Plus
Swansea is in an ideal location for a huge variety of activities, from water-sports like surfing and sailing, to horse-riding and walks along our beautiful coastline.
At CSL, we can arrange specialist English Plus programmes, where you can combine your favourite activity or activities with an English language course.
Options include (but are not limited to):
Surfing; Canoeing; Kite-surfing; Hiking; Golf; Horse-riding; Wind-surfing; Fishing; Water-skiing; Archery; Cycling; Sailing; Tennis; Rock-climbing
Lessons are generally held on weekday mornings, giving you 15 hours of classroom-based learning time. We can then tailor-make a programme for you based on your favourite sport or activity in the afternoons and even on weekends.
Over 40's
If you want to improve your English but do something different this year, then why not join our summer school for the over-40s.
The CSL Silver Course is similar to Summer School Swansea, with a focus on task-based learning and using your language in real-life situations. It also concentrates on British culture, particularly Wales, which has its own special customs, traditions and way-of-life that we want to be the first to show you.
Mornings are spent in class, studying useful everyday language and a focus on speaking and listening. During the afternoons and evenings, the group has the chance to experience Welsh and English culture first-hand, visiting castles, attending cultural events and eating local food.
Winter School Swansea
Based on the Summer School programme, our Winter School classes are focused on speaking and listening in natural, real-life situations, but students have the chance to enjoy the best of Wales and the UK at a completely different but equally lovely time of year.
As well as improving their English, students get the opportunity to experience Swansea in the Winter with trips and activities in afternoons and on weekends such as ice-skating at Swansea Winter Wonderland, shopping at Birmingham Christmas Market (the biggest German Christmas market outside Germany) or take a Wintry walk along Gower, our beautiful coastline.
