The Language Centre at University College Cork offers intensive courses and part time courses in ELT during the academic year, and also has a Summer School from July to mid-September. The courses are open to both students of UCC, and those who wish to take one of the many courses available at the centre. The English language courses are offered in English for general, academic, and professional purposes.

Each year hundreds of students prepare for and take the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination, or also the Cambridge First Certificate (FCE), Advanced (CAE), or Proficiency (CPE) examinations in our centre. The teaching staff are all highly qualified and experienced, and will help you to maximise your language learning potential, and in your academic endeavours. The courses place an emphasis on developing the learner's communicative ability, while also equipping them with techniques to maintain and develop their learning outside the classroom setting.

Cork is known as Corcaigh in Irish, and is sometimes called "Ireland's Venice" because of its many bridges over channels of the River Lee. It is the third city in Ireland. The city has many fine restaurants (nearby Kinsale is known as the gourmet capital of Ireland), cinemas, theatres, art galleries, and shopping centres.

It is just 20 minutes away from some of the most spectacular scenery in Western Europe. Only 20 minutes away you can visit the heritage town of Cobh (pronounced Cove) where the Titanic made its last port of call.

In Ireland sports are very important, and nowhere more than in Cork, the home of hurling, an ancient sports game that is only played in Ireland. Cork currently lead the roll of honour in All-Ireland winners with 30 All-Ireland titles, a fact all Cork people are very proud of. Each weekend it is possible to see live sports in one of the many sporting venues around Cork city. So, why not go to see the magnificent game of hurling when in Cork.
