Pre-K through 8th Grade Educational Programs:

Primary Program (ages 3 to 6):

Simply put, the goal of the Primary years is to help each child fall in love with learning. Exercises in practical life, language development, mathematics, geography, history, biology, music, art and religion are offered. Each child is shown how to use the Montessori materials, and the self-correcting quality of the work chosen enables each to participate as his or her own teacher. Meanwhile guided repetition helps each child focus and gain greater confidence in his or her abilities.

Lower Elementary (ages 6 to 9):
In the Lower Elementary School students from ages 6 to 9 begin to build a new and challenging world on the foundation laid during primary school. The children are ready to move from the facts they so readily accepted earlier to questions. Those questions then lead to further research, written work, and artistic expression.

Upper Elementary (ages 9 to 12):
By ages 9 to 12 students are doing more abstract work and refining their research skills. Children are encouraged at every turn to use their imaginations, to explore their subjects fully and to work collaboratively with each other. In Grade 6 students begin Latin lessons to build on vocabulary and decoding skills. They'll continue these through eighth grade. The goal at this level is to ensure that each child really understands his or her strengths and how to use them to best advantage. Work becomes increasingly more rigorous and homework assumes greater importance, reinforcing daily lessons while also teaching how to meet deadlines and work independently.

Junior High (Grades 7 & 8):
Seventh and Eighth grades will be a child’s last years at Mercy Montessori, but in many very real ways, they are among the most important. Students are now adolescents, with all the challenges inherent to this phase of life. As their world begins to open, and their questions become more urgent, the gentle but structured environment of Mercy allows them to move slowly toward adulthood.
