Sydney English Language Centre (SELC) is an international language school, with students who come to study English from over 30 countries. The SELC General English program is designed to give students (from Beginner to Advanced level) both the skills and confidence they need to communicate in both spoken and written English.

The course focuses on teaching listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in a variety of different contexts. Each week of the course is based on a theme (eg. the media) and students develop their skills and vocabulary through lessons with a thematic connection. One of the main advantages of this approach is that vocabulary and grammatical structures are recycled throughout the week.

Lessons in the General English program are either taken from a textbook or are teacher-made. Teacher-produced lessons provide students with exposure to real-life English from a variety of sources including TV, the Internet, the radio and interviews.

Project work is an important part of the General English curriculum. Each term students take part in a class project. This is a series of lessons and activities through which they produce a final outcome eg. a radio program, a poster or perhaps a class newspaper. Projects allow students to use their English to achieve a set goal and thereby to develop their fluency and confidence in using what they have learnt.

The use of computers as a teaching tool is an important part of the course. Students use the computers for collaborative writing, for Internet research, for essay writing and grammar revision. The use of multimedia is also increasingly developed as students progress through the levels.

The General English program also aims to teach students effective learning strategies and methods of self-evaluation.
