Conveniently situated in the Montford district, adjacent to downtown Asheville NC, Daoist Traditions College of Chinese Medical Arts provides quality graduate programs in the ancient traditions of classical Chinese medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). We offer an accredited 4-year Master of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (MAOM) degree program, and a 24-month Certificate in Chinese Herbal Medicine, which is a postgraduate program designed specifically for acupuncture practitioners.
Master of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (MAOM) Degree Program
Course Duration: 4 years
Steeped in classical training and practices, this comprehensive program teaches you about the ancient traditions of classical Chinese medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is centered around each student’s personal cultivation and growth.
Taught by faculty members with years of practical experience, we prepare you for success - from mastering the fundamental skills through to beginning a successful practice as an independent healthcare provider.
You will learn how to:
- Explain the theories and philosophies of Chinese medicine
- Formulate a skilled diagnosis
- Develop effective treatment plans
- Identify and advise on lifestyle matters influencing the state of health
- Demonstrate in a clinical setting those skills needed to function independently as a health care practitioner
- Describe basic business management skills in order to work in a variety of clinical settings or to establish successful practices
- Identify the conditions that warrant referral and make appropriate referrals
- Incorporate Daoist principles into the practice of Chinese medicine
- Pass the NCCAOM (National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine) certification exams
The supportive classroom environment allows students to learn effectively and feel comfortable putting theories into practice in a clinical setting.
Certificate in Chinese Herbal Medicine
Course Duration: 24 months.
This comprehensive postgraduate course is designed specifically for acupuncture practitioners who want to learn how to safely and effectively incorporate the use of Chinese herbs into their clinical practice.
To allow you to maintain your current practice while studying, classes are scheduled in a convenient, modular weekend intensive format.
Building on previous Chinese medicine theory and acupuncture training, you will learn:
- The unique properties of over 300 individual Chinese herbs
- The composition and therapeutic functions of over 150 traditional prescriptions
- The study of prepared medicines, essential oils, food therapy and drug-herb interactions
- How to prepare herbal formulas in various forms
- To understand commonly seen drug-herb interactions
- To manage patient cases and know when to make appropriate referrals
You will experience 210 hours of clinical training in the herbal dispensary, and supervised practice creating and modifying formulas for individual patients.
On successful graduation, you can sit for the Chinese Herbology Certification exam offered by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).
