Learn to Type - Touch Typing - Online Lessons

Touch Typing: Learning to touch-type is one of the most valuable and frequently used skills you'll ever learn. If you want to increase your productivity and have more success both at work and at home, learn to touch-type!

As people in general are spending more time each day on computers, learning to touch-type can enable you to type much quicker. The quicker you can type, the quicker you can get your jobs done, and the more productive you will become both at work and at home. Touch typists can achieve speeds of over 100 words per minute (wpm), where 40 wpm would be the maximum speed of some-one looking at the keyboard.

Some of the benefits of touch typing include:

  • Completing jobs quickly
  • Achieving deadlines
  • Prevent Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)
  • Ability to correct typos as they occur.
  • Allows you to focus on the job in hand rather than concentrating on the keys
  • Have more free time to sit back and think up ideas
  • Less Stress

Touch typing makes you more productive at whatever it is you do - from Computer Programmers to Recreational Computer Users. As many people nowadays do their banking and pay their bills online, it difficult to avoid using the keyboard.

Healthy Typing!
When learning how to touch type it is important to assume the correct posture. Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) or Carpal tunnel syndrome is frequent among computer users, and has become associated with keyboard use. To reduce your risk of developing RSI or other overuse injuries you should sit with you back straight and both feet on the floor. You can use a pedestal to slightly raise your feet off the ground at an angle.

It is also important for you to take regular breaks for your eyes, as when looking at a monitor, people tend to blink less causing the eyes to dry out. A good tip is to look away from the monitor and focus on the furthest point in the room for a few seconds every hour. If typing causes you pain, then stop. If the pain persists, consult your doctor. As touch-typing involves less movement, and is less taxing on the hands and wrists, it can help prevent RSI or Carpal tunnel syndrome when done correctly.

Start Today!
Touch typing is easy to learn and very rewarding, instead of watching the keyboard as you type, you will watch the screen. With some practice you will learn where each key is and be able to type words without having to look at the keyboard.

Touch typing is an enjoyable way to work, and is less tiring and stressful than having to concentrate on both the monitor and keyboard. After a while, the touch typing process becomes automatic, and you don't have to keep moving your eyes from the screen to the keyboard. Another benefit is that, because you're watching what you type, you can spot any typing errors and correct them straightaway.
