What does distance learning really mean?
Distance learning is a term that is commonly misunderstood. It differs from correspondence or e-learning courses in that our study methods offer you support and a blend of materials and resources. You can choose to study when and where your lifestyle allows, and access to your tutor and other students means you need never feel isolated. Tutorial groups and residential schools give you the opportunity to discuss issues and network face to face.
What materials will I receive?
Because The Open University Business School courses are written specifically for distance learning, they are produced in a variety of media to make your learning experience stimulating and varied. Your course books will be accompanied by a Study Guide, to help you get the most from your studies. Course materials can also include CD-ROMs, video tapes, audio tapes and the course website. The Open University Business School courses include all the materials you need to complete your studies and the cost is included in the basic fee.
How will we support you?
You will be allocated a tutor at the beginning of your course who will be accessible by email, phone or post. Tutors are on average allocated 16 students for each course presentation and depending on location, will normally try to organise tutorials and seminars. Your tutor will give you feedback on your coursework (Tutor Marked Assignments or TMAs) and will encourage you throughout your studies.
Will you get the chance to meet other students?Depending on location, your tutor may organise tutorial sessions and seminars at which you can meet fellow students. You will have access to "First Class", our online conferencing facility. Some courses hold Residential Schools, normally 2-5 days and usually held over a weekend to minimize disruption to your working life. These workshops can help you to crystallize your thoughts on the course, and network with other students.
Accreditation is the most important point to look for. The primary international accrediting bodies are:-
- The Association of MBAs (AMBA)
- The European Foundation for Management Development (EQUIS)
- The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business
The Open University Business School is one of an elite group of business schools worldwide that has triple accreditation - AMBA, EQUIS and AACSB.
You need to be aware of the distinction between recognition in a country’s national legislation and accreditation through an international MBA accreditation body. It is worthwhile to use accreditation bodies as an independent source of information on the universities you are considering.
The reputation of the business school is also important so talking to current students and alumni will be worthwhile.
Although increased emphasis is placed on ranking and league tables, care should be taken when reviewing them. League table criteria may not be relevant for the school, or for your personal needs so the tables can mislead as well as inform your decision.
