In 1995, Vietnam established its Embassy in Washington D.C. following the normalization of diplomatic relations with the US Over the last 16 years; relations between Vietnam and the United States have developed quickly in all areas including economic, political, security, education, scientific and humanitarian cooperation. The two countries are now heading toward even a higher level of development in bilateral relationship.
The main services provided by the Embassy include:

- Passports and emergency travel documents

- Legalisation Service
- Notarial services, etc.
A VISA to Vietnam can be applied for by mail or in person at the Embassy of Vietnam as early as six months prior to the date of travel.
Visa fees must be in the form of MONEY ORDER, or CASHIER'S CHECK, or CERTIFIED CHECK payable to "THE EMBASSY OF VIETNAM." Applicants applying together may submit combined payment in one money order or certified check. Fee for stamping visa can be checked at Consular Fee.
Five business days are required to process visa applications with approval.
Theft or loss of a valid passport must be reported to the police and a police report should be presented when applying for a new passport. Otherwise a passport is applied as normally. When reporting a lost passport to the police it should be noted that a report made by telephone and a registration number given on the basis of that might not be adequate proof to the insurance company. The report can be made in person at a police station so that a report of the crime is available in writing.
