The Consulates are providing assistance and issuing various types of visas.
Immigrant Visas are issued when the applicants are intending to become permanent residents in the United States.
Non-Immigrant Visas are for temporary stay.
Visa Waver Program - the US representations provide information on how to travel to US without a visa.

Due to a variety of procedural factors, US Consulates are unable to guarantee the issuance of a US visa before a fixed travel date. The applicant should never pay for travel arrangements before having a visa in possession.

*NOTE: US passports (including lost or stolen) and visas services are not available at the Embassy in Canberra. For Visa and US Citizen Services one should contact the General Consulate that serves in the area.

In the event of an emergency involving an American citizen that requires urgent consular assistance, one should call the US Consulate in the district. Emergencies may include the death, arrest or serious injury/illness of an American citizen, victims of serious crime, or the loss/theft of a US passport and travel is scheduled within the next 10 business days.

Emergencies do not include inquiries about US visas, or routine passport, citizenship, notary, taxation or federal benefits questions.
