The Embassy of Sweden in Washington, D.C. is one of the largest Swedish missions in the world. The Embassy is the official communications link between the Swedish and American governments. The Ambassador heads the Embassy and is the official representative of the Swedish Government to the United States Government.

In addition to the Ambassador's office and the office of the Deputy Chief of Mission, there are eight sections of the Embassy, each headed by a minister or counselor, who in turn is assisted by staffs of various sizes.

The minister/consul general is the head of the Chancery and is in charge of personnel matters, daily administrative routines, housing and communications. Consular duties include the issuance of passports, visas, labor permits and aid to Swedes in distress.

All passport applicants at the Embassy of Sweden in Washington must be digitally photographed and fingerprinted on site at the time of the application. Applications may no longer be submitted at the honorary consulates in the US, except for when the Embassy of Sweden offers this service at different consulates in the US on certain dates through the mobile passport station.

The Embassy in Washington DC has initiated scheduled appointments to apply for/renew regular passports/ID cards. One can book an appointment online or by calling the Embassy reception at (202) 467-2600. Remember to keep the reference code you get when you book the appointment. It will be needed to cancel or reschedule.

All applicants for passports or national identity cards must provide proof of identity, as well as proof of Swedish citizenship. Applicants are advised to consult embassy or consulate staff in advance of submitting their application.

If a passport is lost or missing, the following is required:

• Completed notification of loss (förlustanmälan), on the back side of the white section of the passport application form.
• Copy of your census registration record, available from the local tax office where you were most recently registered.
• Driver's license or other valid photo ID.

New passports are normally issued within 1-2 weeks from the time of application. If the person is traveling in the next few days and need a passport immediately, he/she may apply for an emergency (temporary) passport.

As of January 1, 2012 the Embassy in Washington, DC require personal appearance of Schengen visa applicants in the following categories:

• Visiting Family and Friends
• Tourist
• Students - studying for less than 90 days
• Business or Conference - first time traveling to Schengen

US citizens visiting for fewer than 90 days are not required to obtain a Schengen visa. The Schengen member states maintain a list of countries whose citizens must obtain a visa to enter the zone.

NOTE: An entry visa does not automatically entitle the holder to enter the Schengen area. A decision is made every time the traveler passes through a border control, as travelers must have (1) proof of sufficient funds to support themselves for the duration of their stay and for their return, (2) travel medical insurance, and (3) documents indicating the purpose of their visit.
