The Embassy's main function is to promote Norwegian interests in the United Kingdom and further develop Norwegian-British relations. The Norwegian Embassy in the United Kingdom is one of Norway's largest foreign missions. The ties between the two countries are strong and solid. The two nations enjoy a long-standing and close relationship in the political, economic and cultural fields. The Embassy works in close contact with British and Norwegian official and private institutions as well as organisations and individuals. It also works closely with the London office of Innovation Norway.
The Embassy's Consular Section gives advice and assistance in matters such as issuing passports, granting visas and in legal matters regarding marriage, divorce, inheritance, pensions, social security and paternity cases.
The Section is also responsible for all maritime affairs with respect to the Norwegian Ship Registers, the signing on and off of seamen on board Norwegian-registered vessels, and maritime inquiries.
Enquiries by phone: 10.00-11.00 Monday to Friday.
Visa appointments and visa collections: 11.00-12.00 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
Passport appointments, Norwegian passport collections and other inquiries: 13.30-15.00 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Wednesdays are closed for customers.
The Embassy has outsourced its visa services to the external service provider VFS. Visa applications can be submitted at VFS' offices in London and Edinburgh. All applicants must book appointments and apply in person. Please note that no postal applications can be sent to the Embassy. Postal applications that are addressed to the Embassy will be returned to the sender without being processed.
The processing time for a visa application depends on the nationality of the applicant and the supporting documents submitted. Applicants should always apply several weeks before their intended journey. Applications for Schengen visas can be submitted at the earliest 90 days before the planned travel date, and at the latest 15 days before the planned departure date.
If the case is considered uncomplicated, it will be processed within 15 working days (counting from the day the Embassy receives all the requested documents). If the case is considered complicated, it will be handled by the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) in Norway, and it may take more than 15 days to process.
All passports for adults and children over 12 must be applied for in person at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in London. In order to apply for a Norwegian passport you need to have a Norwegian personal number (ID number). If you do not have a personal number, you must apply for this before lodging a passport application. Children under the age of 12 must meet in person either at the Embassy in London or at one of the Norwegian Consulates in the UK to apply for a passport.
A person in possession of an ordinary passport may be issued a second passport when there is a documented need for it, e.g. in connection with extensive business travel that requires frequent visa applications. A letter from the employer must be submitted with the application. The second passport will have a maximum validity of two years. Passport applications take 7-10 days to process.
