The New Zealand Embassy and Permanent Mission in Vienna is an overseas post of the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Alongside Austria, the Embassy is currently accredited to Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia. The focus of the Embassy's work is to advance New Zealand's political, trade and economic and people-to-people relations with these three EU member states. In pursuing these objectives, the Embassy works closely with the New Zealand Honorary Consulates in Budapest and Ljubljana and other partners including New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and Tourism New Zealand. The Embassy also serves as the New Zealand Permanent Mission to the United Nations and other international organisations, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO) and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), based in Vienna.
The Embassy can assist with the following:
- give advice, with the aim of helping their citizens to help themselves
- help one contact relatives or friends to request emergency funds
- provide a list of local lawyers, and help contacting family and friends, if one is detained or arrested
- help with arrangements following a death overseas
- help during crises, such as civil unrest and natural disasters
Only the Department of Internal Affairs passport offices in London, Sydney or New Zealand can issue a passport. A new online passport renewal service is now available. In an emergency, most but not all New Zealand Embassies may be able to issue an Emergency Travel Document. Where postal services are irregular, the Embassy can assist with forwarding passport applications to Wellington. There is a separate fee for this service payable in local currency.
Before certain New Zealand documents can be used overseas, Document Authentication or apostille certification may be necessary. It is usually required where overseas officials are not able to determine on sight the authenticity of New Zealand documents. The process varies depending on the document type and country requirements and can only be done in Wellington by the Authentications Unit of the Department of Internal Affairs.
