The Dutch Embassy in Ottawa offers a wide selection of consular and other services to Dutch as well as Canadian citizens. It includes:

  • Asylum seekers and refugees
  • Consular Services
  • Dutch Nationality
  • Passports
  • Visa
  • Various Certificates
  • Legalization
  • Family Matter
  • Registration
  • Notarial Acts

For Passports all applicants must apply in person at a Dutch Mission since the Embassy is lawfully required to confirm the identity and take the applicants' fingerprints. This also applies to children as well.

Dutch passports currently take approximately two to three weeks to process, provided the application and documents submitted by the applicant are correct and complete. The process may take considerably longer if further information is required. One is therefore advised to submit the application well before the current passport's expiration date or the intended travel date.

If the passport is lost, stolen or expired and the person has an immediate need to travel a regular passport cannot be processed on time. In this case an emergency passport or laissez passer could be issued to accommodate the travel.

Please note that the final decision to issue an emergency travel document is the sole responsibility of the Regional Service Organization. All applications will be considered, but the Embassy reserves the right to refer the applicant to the regular passport application process and waiting time.

Dutch nationals living abroad are not required to register themselves, though they may do so if they choose. The Dutch mission will not register the person if, for example, he/she contacts them to renew your passport. If one has had their name removed from the Dutch Population Register, they are expected to register with the foreign municipality in which they live, if applicable.
