Due to the issuance of biometric passports (that contain information on finger prints and digital photo), requesting a Moldovan passport has to be done IN PERSON at the Embassy of Moldova in Washington DC. If the applicant's Moldovan passport has expired, got lost or he/she never had a Moldovan passport, the applicant has to apply for a new passport at the Embassy.
Moldovan Passport that has expired or has been damaged/the foreign passport of the former Soviet Union and the Moldovan ID (buletin de identitate)/the internal passport of the former Soviet Union; In case of losing these documents, a declaration of loss will be completed at the Embassy.
NOTE: That the process of obtaining a Moldovan passport takes about four months, due to the fact that the passport is issued in Moldova and has to be sent to the Embassy. Unfortunately the process cannot be expedited.
For urgent travels to Moldova, when your passport is expired or lost, or if your children never had a Moldovan passport, you can request for yourself or your children, via mail, a Travel Document that is valid for 30 days.
The Embassy issues travel documents to Moldovan citizens, regardless of their residence, stateless persons and foreign citizens residing permanently in the Republic of Moldova, when they intend to return to Moldova, and:
- Have lost their passport or it got stolen;
- Their passport got damaged and it cannot be used;
- Have an expired passport;
- Never had a passport.
NOTE: The request is examined within 5 business days. The Embassy is not responsible for losses or delays caused by the postal company!
The validity of the travel document is 30 days and cannot be extended. Taking into account the time required for the delivery of the postal envelope in both directions, the request should be send to the Embassy about a month prior to the departure to Moldova. Travel document is valid for only one trip with the required final destination - the Republic of Moldova.
Restrictions in using the Travel document: Schengen zone rules allow the airport transit through one member state only. For making an airport transit through a second Schengen state a transit visa is required. Please contact the diplomatic missions of all the states you are going to transit to inquire about the transit visa application procedure.
Citizens of the United States traveling to Moldova must have a valid passport (that does not expire before the end of their visit), but do not require a visa for stays of less than 90 days within a six-month period. Other travelers may apply for a Schengen visa, which allows them to enter Belgium or another Schengen country and then to travel freely throughout the Schengen zone for a period not to exceed 90 days.
The citizens of the Republic of Moldova, who are legally and permanently established abroad, and have filed the request for the departure for permanent residence in the USA/Canada/Mexico and have received in their Moldovan passports the stamp that clearly indicates: "Departure for permanent residence in USA/Canada/Mexico", are required by law to request the consular registration at the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova accredited for their state of residence.
