Any Latvian citizen traveling abroad can refer to Latvian embassies, if he/she needs some travel assistance or is in need of help. Consular assistance to Latvian nationals can be given 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The Embassy can provide these consular services:
- In case of stolen/lost travel documents abroad, Latvian Embassy can issue return documents;
- If Latvian citizen abroad has no money left, Latvian Embassy can help get in touch with relatives or friends;
- In case of accidents, Latvian Embassy can assist in dealing with formalities, contact and explain the situation to the relatives;
- If Latvian citizen ends up in Lithuanian prison, Latvian Embassy can visit Latvian citizen and inform his/her relatives/friends;
- Latvian Embassy can represent Latvian national's rights and legal interests;
- Latvian Embassy performs the certification of document authenticity (legalisation) (within 2 working days from the submission and making the payment of the fee);
- Latvian Embassy issues Shengen visas valid for the territory of all the Shengen states.
In case of lost/stolen passport, Latvian Embassy can issue a temporary travel document to return to Latvia. This return certificate is valid for a maximum of 30 days. The certificate is intended for direct return to Latvia - not to travel to other countries that are not on the way to Latvia. Also, when the passport is lost or stolen, Latvian citizens must report this to local police station and obtain a notification of the theft/loss.
Entry into and residence in Latvia of citizens of the European Union member states, European Economic Area states and the Swiss Confederation (hereinafter - Union citizens), and their family members is not restricted and they have the right of moving and residing freely within the territory of the Member States
The Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs accepts payments for consular services only by means of non-cash payment. Visitors can pay with payment cards (VISA, VISA Electron, Maestro, Master, American Express) or via credit institutions.

- 4 May - Declaration of Latvian Independence Day
- 23 June - Midsummer Eve
- 24 June - John's Day
- 18 November - Latvian National Day
- 24, 25, 26 December - Christmas Day and Boxing Day
- 31 December - New Year's Eve
If holidays - May 4th and November 18th - fall on Saturday or Sunday, the following Monday is a day off.
