The Consular Section of the Japanese Embassy in Ottawa provides consular assistance and services to overseas Japanese, which include citizen registration, identification documents and passport related matters, emergency travel documents, legalization of documents, etc. The Consulate also issues visas to foreign nations who wish to visit Japan and offers a range of other services and information on Japan.

The Japanese representations in Canada are issuing various visas such as:

  • Working Holiday Visa
  • Employment and Work Visa
  • General Visa
  • Specified Visa
  • Temporary Visitor Visa
  • Transit Visa
  • Visa for Medical Stay

For the purpose of promoting greater mutual understanding between Japan and Canada, the governments of these two countries agreed in 1986 to start a Working-Holiday scheme to help encourage the exchange of young people. This program makes it possible for citizens of one country to enter the other primarily for a holiday over an extended period, and also to engage in employment as an incidental aspect of their trip in order to supplement their travel funds.

With this visa, Canadian citizens need not obtain further permission to engage in remunerative activities while in Japan. However, this programme is not designed for persons who mainly intend to work. The applicants' primary purpose of stay should be to "holiday" in Japan.

Working-Holiday Visas are normally processed in a minimum of one week.  Applications submitted on short notice will not be accepted.

The Embassy is closed on the following holidays:

  • January 1st - New Year's Day
  • January 2nd - Japanese Government Holiday
  • January 3rd - Japanese Government Holiday
  • February 18th - Family Day
  • March/April - Good Friday
  • March/April - Easter Monday
  • May 20th - Victoria Day
  • July 1st - Canada Day
  • August 5th - Civic Holiday
  • September 2nd - Labour Day

  • November 11th - Remembrance Day
  • December 23rd - Emperor's Birthday
