Emergency Assistance for Irish Citizens in Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia, the Caribbean, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

The Embassy operates a weekend out-of-hours service for Irish citizens requiring emergency assistance. If one is in need of emergency assistance, please contact the Embassy at + 1-202-462-3939 and leave a message on the answering machine.  The answering machine is monitored regularly, and the Duty Officer will contact you as soon as possible. Alternatively, one may contact the Duty Officer at the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin at + 353-1-408-2000.

If one's passport is lost or stolen, contact the Embassy as soon as possible. The applicant must also go to the nearest Police Station and make a report. Keep a copy of the statement to the police as you will have to submit it with your application for a new passport.

The Passport Office, in accordance with EU regulations in relation to reported lost or stolen passports, is now advising international authorities, through Interpol, of all passports reported to the Passport Office as having been lost or stolen. Any passport that is reported as lost or stolen is no longer a valid travel document. If it is recovered, it should be returned to the Passport Office for cancellation. Care should be taken to avoid its use for travel purposes.

In general one should allow 6-8 weeks for the processing of the passport via the Embassy. This includes the transmission of the application to the Dublin Passport Office where the passport is printed and the return of the passport to the Embassy by the diplomatic bag service.

The Embassy currently accepts payments for passports in the form of money order, certified bank check/draft or credit card (visa, mastercard or american express). Payments should be made payable to the ‘Department of Foreign Affairs - Ireland'. The Embassy no longer accepts cash payments.

Fees are charged for certain consular services such as issuing passports and visas, foreign birth registrations, authentication of documents and administering oaths. These fees are fixed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade by way of Statutory Instrument issued under Section 3 of the Diplomatic and Consular Officers (Provision of Services) Act, 1993.
