The Embassy of Iceland in Germany has started its work in 1952, right after the establishment of the diplomatic relations between both countries. The Embassy in Berlin is also side accredited to Croatia, Montenegro, Poland and Serbia and works with the assistance of 12 Icelandic honorary consulates, whereas 10 only exist in Germany. The Embassy´s duties are based on the political, economical and cultural exchange between Iceland and the other countries. To the daily duties also belong consular functions and the response to common inquiries about Iceland.
As of May 17th 2006 Iceland starts issuing new Biometric Passports. From July 2006, Icelandic Citizens will be able to apply for the new Biometric Passports through the Icelandic Embassy in Berlin but also in Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, London and Washington. Other Icelandic Embassies and Icelandic Consulates can not accept applications for Icelandic Passports as of May 17th 2006. Consulates can prolong the validity of Icelandic Passports but only for one year as of the date that it expired. Emergency Passports are only issued to Icelandic Citizens that are not able to apply for new passports through Icelandic Embassies. It should be noted that Emergency Passports are not ideal travel documents.
Icelandic citizens who wish to apply for a new Passport through the Embassy of Iceland in Berlin need to make an appointment.
If a person’s passport is stolen in Germany or abroad, one should immediately report the loss to the nearest police station. The applicant also needs to report a loss of the passport to the issuing authority. The Icelandic Embassy in Berlin can help the person either by issuing a new passport or a temporary travel document.
