Iceland established a Permanent Mission to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in the year 1999 and two years later (2001) the Embassy of Iceland in Vienna was opened. Today the Embassy represents Iceland in Austria and is also accredited to the Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Republic of Hungary, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and the Republic of Slovenia.

The Embassy is furthermore a Permanent Mission to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), The United Nations Offices in Vienna (UNOV), The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Preparatory Commission to the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty Organisation, all of which are located in Vienna.

The Embassy's consular services include issuing of Icelandic passports, Icelandic driving licences, assistance in connection with illness and death and legislation.

Icelandic nationals who wish to apply for a new passport must do so in person at the Embassy. Passports are issued in Iceland and the estimated processing time is five working days with additional 3-4 days for postage. Please note that consuls can no longer receive applications for new passports. However, they can extend passports and issue provisional and emergency passports.

If a person's passport is stolen in Austria or abroad, one should immediately report the loss to the nearest police station. The applicant also needs to report a loss of the passport to the issuing authority. The Icelandic Embassy in Vienna can help the person either by issuing a new passport or a temporary travel document.
