The Hungarian Embassy in Vienna is the formal communication link between the Hungarian and the Austrian governments. The Ambassador heads the Embassy and is the official representative to Austrian of the Hungarian Government. The Embassy fulfills the role of a Hungarian public authority when it comes to consular and migration-related matters, which include issuance of passports and different kinds of certificates, visas for students, residence and work permits as well as assistance to Hungarians in emergency situations.

The Administrative and Consular Section deals with all matters related to passports, visa and judicial affairs and also all administrative matters concerning the Embassy.

  • Visas
  • Passports
  • Residence and Work permits
  • Family and legal matters
  • Elections
  • Legalisation
  • Legislation, etc.

The passport procedure is 30 days which does not include the duration of the transport of the passport from Budapest to the Consulate. The average procedure time is 5-8. If the applicant cannot prove his/her citizenship the Consulate starts a procedure to verify the citizenship which could take up to 16 weeks as an average time but it could be much longer.

Hungary joined the Schengen Area on 19 December, 2007. From that time visas and residence permits issued by one of the Schengen Member States are valid also for Hungary, and visas/residence permits issued by Hungarian authorities are - as a general rule - also valid for the entire Schengen Area.

Legalisation of signatures:
Legalisation of a signature means that the consul establishes the veracity of the signature only, and not of the document, for which the Consular Section bears no responsibility. The document will have to be prepared by you personally in advance. We are unable to assist you in drawing up or typing out the document. In order to attest the veracity of your signature, you need to come to the Consular Section in person, and present an identification document such as your valid passport and any household bill (e.g. electricity bill) or financial statement, or property lease or tenancy agreement showing your name and current address.
