In case of loss or theft, the holder of the lost passport must report the loss immediately to the nearest police or consular authority (the same holds true if the lost passport is found). The above authority carries out an investigation (which may last up to 3 months) into the circumstances under which the passport was lost or stolen. During the investigation, a new passport is not issued to the applicant unless it is deemed necessary that the applicant travel abroad to receive medical treatment.
In cases of emergency, provisional traveling documents can be issued by Greek Consular Missions abroad for the repatriation of Greek citizens.
Greece is a member state of the European Union and a part of the Schengen Treaty. These two capacities determine visa requirements for foreign citizens who wish to visit Greece. Visas are not required by citizens of Member-States of the Schengen Agreement. Citizens of the majority of the countries that are not Member-States of the Schengen Agreement require a visa to enter Greece and the E.U. Visitors from these countries can obtain further information from the Hellenic Embassies or Consulates in their countries, or even from their travel agencies. During their stay in Greece, visitors with a visa must also have suitable insurance coverage for emergency medical or other needs.
The Embassy is closed on weekends and public holidays.
