France is represented by two Consulates General in the UK, one in London covering England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the other in Edinburgh for Scotland.
The Consulate General acts as Registrar for French nationals resident in the UK: issues them with identity cards and passports, registers their births, deaths and marriages, enters them on the electoral rolls and organizes polling stations for major national elections, draws up notarial acts and ensures the protection of their rights with regards to the British authorities. It is also responsible for issuing visas pursuant to the Schengen Agreement to persons who require them.
A passport is an official document issued by the French Administration, when living abroad the Consulate/Embassy issues it. It proves the person's identity and allows one to travel abroad outside the EU. It can take several weeks to issue a passport as they are all produced in France. The consulate cannot intervene in the process of making the passport, therefore it is strongly advised to request it early enough to avoid disappointment if one had plans for traveling.
The passport holder, whatever his/her age, must come in person to collect his/her new passport, and must return the previous one, as it belongs to the French State. If the applicant has not collected the passport within 3 months of the "ready" date, it will be destroyed.
In case of a passport get lost or stolen the person must go the local police station to report it before coming to the consulate. There the applicant will be given a "crime number". One must then go to the consulate as soon as possible, and follow the procedure to renew the documents.
Passport collection times are: Monday to Thursday, 9.00 - 16.45, Friday 9.00 - 15.00
