The Embassy represents Finland in the international monetary and scientific institutions based in the Washington area. The Embassy works in close co-operation with the Finnish-American community in the US. They help Finnish-Americans preserve and keep in touch with their cultural heritage. The Embassy protects all Finnish citizens and defends their rights. The Embassy presents displays of Finnish culture regularly for the general public and provides them with information services. The Finnish chancery in Washington, D.C. welcomes approximately 18,000 visitors each year.

The Embassy of Finland in Washington and the Finnish Consulate General in New York and Los Angeles provide consular services that include passports for Finnish Citizens, assistance to Finnish citizens in distress, population registration, notary services, and matters relating to military service and Finnish citizenship. Pre-elections are also arranged by the Finnish missions.

The Finnish missions in the United States also provide information about Finnish authorities, and give general advice in legal and administrative issues. Foreigners can contact the Embassy and Consulates General for matters concerning entry into and residence in Finland (Schengen -visa, residence and work permit).

The Finnish diplomatic missions are, according to the Consular Services Act, obligated to assist Finns in crisis situations abroad. Situations requiring assistance must also be assessed from the premise of what are the actual capabilities of the Finnish mission to help. Please note that the United States government is responsible for all citizens in their jurisdiction in case of crisis situations and one should comply with instruction given by local authorities.

Familiarizing oneself with the proper procedures can greatly increase the likelihood of surviving a crisis situation. The Embassy of Finland in Washington D.C. has compiled a preparedness plan for Finns living in the areas of Washington D.C., Virginia and Maryland.

Instructions for tourist, business and transit visas for short visits, less than 90 days within 6 months, can be found under Visas. Note please: Starting on October 1, 2011, the Embassy of Finland in Washington DC will no longer issue visas. Visa applicants residing in Washington DC, Virginia or Maryland should contact the Embassy of Sweden, which represents Finland in visa matters. Incomplete applications will not be processed.

The Finnish Immigration Service grants the residence permits for workers and students. However, one should first bring their application with the attachments to the Consulate General in New York or Los Angeles or the Embassy of Finland, Washington D.C. depending on the jurisdiction. Applicants will also be fingerprinted at the time of filing the application. The Embassy or Consulate will gather and check the documents before forwarding them for further processing to the Immigration Service.

Payment may be in the form of cash, a money order, or a certified check made out to "Embassy of Finland Washington DC", "Consulate General of Finland New York" or "Consulate General of Finland Los Angeles".  Personal checks or credit cards are not accepted.
