The Consular Section protects the interests of Finnish nationals in the United Kingdom. Its services include providing passports and notary services, visas for foreigners travelling to Finland, and assistance to Finnish citizens in distress. In addition to the Embassy of Finland in London, Finland has Honorary Consuls based in 26 other cities in the United Kingdom.
The Consular Section acts as the competent Finnish authority in matters such as passports, notary services and certain specific legal transactions, and advises non-Finnish citizens with entry permit matters. It also assists other Finnish authorities with citizenship, population register, military service and family law matters, and with arrangements for absentee voting.
Finnish Embassies and Consulates can do the following:
- advise on how to transfer money through a bank or other money transfer company (such as Western Union),
- transfer funds to help those in distress,
- help victims of sudden illness, accidents and crimes so that they can get the medical care or other immediate assistance they need,
- grant a temporary passport for repatriation (to replace a passport which is outdated or which has been lost, stolen or destroyed),
- contact the insurance company in cases of sickness or death,
- help those in distress or crisis situations, or those taken into custody, to get in touch with their next of kin
All Finnish citizens living abroad have the duty to inform and update the Register Centres in Finland of all amendments and changes regarding their personal details. These include children born abroad, marriage, change of name, change of address etc.
A passport application form should be completed in person, also when children are applying, at the Consulate section in the Embassy or the local police offices in Finland. In the United Kingdom the Embassy in London is the only place where you can apply for a new passport.
Theft or loss of a valid passport must be reported to the police and a police report should be presented when applying for a new passport. Otherwise a passport is applied as normally. When reporting a lost passport to the police it should be noted that a report made by telephone and a registration number given on the basis of that might not be adequate proof to the insurance company. The report can be made in person at a police station so that a report of the crime is available in writing.
Normal processing time is approximately two weeks. Passport can be collected from the Embassy or upon request the passport can be posted by a prepaid special delivery. A person authorised by the applicant may also collect the passport.
Emergency passport can be issued to a person only in a valid emergency type situation e.g. if a passport has been lost or stolen. Reliable clarifications are required. Emergency passports are usually issued only accordingly with the necessary travel plan for instance returning back to the country of residence.
Nationals who are required to hold a visa must always be in possession of one when entering the Schengen area. A Schengen visa must always be applied at the Embassy of the country of the applicant's main destination. If one clearly does not have a main destination and/or if he/she is visiting several countries within the trip, the person should apply at the Embassy of the country of the first destination.
The visa section is open for applicants to submit their application BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. Appointment hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 10.00 - 12.00.
