The Embassy of Finland represents the Government of Finland in Canada and looks after Finland´s political, economic and cultural interests. Also reports to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, other authorities, and stakeholder groups on Canadian matters of significance to the interests of Finland and the European Union. The Embassy provides consular services to Finnish citizens and permanent residents as well as to visitors to Finland and other EU countries. It directs the activities of honorary consuls at thirteen different locations across Canada as they assist the Embassy in performing these tasks. Finland's ambassador to Canada is also accredited to the Bahamas.

The Embassy in Ottawa provides a range of services, including:

  • Passports
  • Assistance with matters pertaining to Finnish authorities such as citizenship, military service, and population register
  • Aid to citizens in distress
  • Administration of voting in Canada for Finnish national elections
  • Visas
  • Residence and work permits
  • Notary services
  • Information on Finland and Finnish public services, etc.

In Canada the applicant must file his or her application for a biometric passport in person at the Embassy of Finland in Ottawa because the necessary equipment is only installed at the Embassy. The Ministry of Finance did not provide funding to install such equipment at any honorary consulate, including those in Toronto and Vancouver.

If a citizen's valid passport has been stolen or lost, the applicant must report it to the police, and present a police report to the Embassy when applying for a new passport.

Processing time for a 5-year passport is about 4 weeks. A temporary passport may be issued only in a case of emergency (in practice only for a trip back to the home country). In order to apply for a temporary passport the applicant has to come to the Embassy of Finland in Ottawa in person.

The fee may be paid either by cash, money order, or certified cheque made out to Embassy of Finland. Personal cheques will not be accepted. The fee is non-refundable.

Canadian citizens do not require a visa for visits to Finland provided that their stay does not exceed 90 days within the period of 6 months. However, a passport is required to enter the country. If the intended length of stay in Finland and within the Schengen area exceeds 90 days, a residence permit is required.

All Visa applications in Canada are processed in the Embassy of Finland in Ottawa. One should allow at least two weeks for application to be processed. The process cannot be started until all the paperwork is submitted. Visa application can be submitted earliest 3 months prior to your trip.
