The Czech-Finnish relations date back to the end of 14th century when also Finns were coming from the Nordic countries to study at Prague University and after that they worked in clerical administration at home and some of them became also politicians. In 1578 Colegium Nordicum, a special seminar for education of Catholic missioners, was found by a Jesuit campus in Olomouc where also many Finns were studying and after returning to their country they acted as secret Catholics in clerical offices. However during the severe persecution of Catholics under the reign of Duke Kaarle they were usually discovered, deprived from their office and forced to leave the country.

The Embassy of the Czech Republic is responsible for developing and maintaining relations between the Czech Republic and the Republic of Finland. The Consular Section provides services for Czech citizens in Finland and for foreigners who intend to travel to the Czech Republic. The Commercial Section handles trade and investments matters, helps Czech companies to do business in Finland and Finnish companies to invest in the Czech Republic.

Regionalisation of the visa sections in the countries of the Member States of the Schengen area:

The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Helsinki informs that from January 1, 2011, applications for the visa to enter the Czech Republic and applications for the long-term and permanent residency in the Czech Republic can be lodged only at visa sections of the Embassies of these Embassies of the Czech Republic in the Schengen area: Athens, Berlin, Bratislava, Madrid, Stockholm, Warsaw and Vienna.

Visa sections of all the other Embassies and Consulates General of the Czech Republic in the Member States of the Schengen area were closed on December 31, 2010.The regionalisation will by no means influence other consular services of the Czech Embassies/Consulates General. The regionalisation will refer to applications of all kinds of residence permits in the Czech Republic (visa up to 90 days of stay, visa over 90 days of stay, long term residency permit and permanent residency permit).

The decision about regionalisation was motivated by a significantly lower number of visa applications at the Czech Embassies/Consulates General in the Member States of the Schengen area and by the efforts in order to improve the efficiency of the Czech Embassies/Consulates General.

Czech citizens are obliged to register births, marriages and deaths that occurred outside the Czech Republic with the Special Register Office in Brno, Czech Republic. This can be done via our Consular Section of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Helsinki, during an appointment. The registration of the above-mentioned events must be done as soon as possible after they occur.

Theft or loss of a valid passport must be reported to the police and a police report should be presented when applying for a new passport. Otherwise a passport is applied as normally. When reporting a lost passport to the police it should be noted that a report made by telephone and a registration number givenĀ  on the basis of that might not be adequate proof to the insurance company. The report can be made in person at a police station so that a report of the crime is available in writing.
