The Consular Section of the Chinese Embassy in Berlin provides consular assistance and services to overseas Chinese citizens, which include citizen registration, identification documents and passport related matters, emergency travel documents, legalization of documents, etc. The Consulate also issues visas to foreign nations who wish to visit China and offers a range of other services and information on China.

The main services provided by the Embassy include:

  • Registry
  • Health and economic assistance
  • Repatriation and repatriation for health reasons
  • Consular protection
  • Citizenship
  • Notary services
  • Passports
  • Civil status
  • Visas, etc.

Theft or loss of a valid passport must be reported to the police and a police report should be presented when applying for a new passport. Otherwise a passport is applied as normally. When reporting a lost passport to the police it should be noted that a report made by telephone and a registration number given  on the basis of that might not be adequate proof to the insurance company. The report can be made in person at a police station so that a report of the crime is available in writing.

Legalization means the authentication of a signature of seal/stamp appearing on a document. To have documents which originate in Germany accepted in the People's Republic of China, you shall go to the Legalization Office of the Germany Foreign Affairs Ministry to authenticate the signatures or seals of local notary publics. Then you may come to the Embassy to legalize the signatures of the officials of the Foreign Affairs Ministry. Please be advised that the legalization only confirms that the signature and seals of the officials of the Foreign Affairs Ministry on your document are genuine. It does NOT mean that the contents of the document are correct or the Embassy approves of the contents. If the content of a document is deemed to be illegal, detrimental or immoral in China, legalization will be rejected.

When applying for a visa:

  • Applicants should apply for a visa about one month before their intended date of entry into China, and they should not apply more than three months prior to their journey. They should take upon themselves any consequences resulting from their failure to submit visa application at an appropriate time, which may lead to either their already-issued visa becoming expired or it being too late to get a visa before their planned departure date.
  • Whether applicants come to the embassy in person or consign others for the visa application, the applicants should sign on the application form (except the minors older than 16 years old). Any information correction by the consignee is supposed to be confirmed by the applicant.
  • Once submitted, the visa application cannot be corrected or cancelled. No visa application documents will be returned, the applicants should copy it themselves in advance if necessary.
  • Consular Officers decide on whether a visa is to be issued or not, what type of visa is to be issued, the visa's period of validity, duration of stay and number of entry in the light of China's laws and regulations. The applicants should not take the collection date specified in their pickup forms for granted. The informed date of visa collection is only applied to the general. Consular Officers may request an applicant to provide additional supporting documents or have an interview with the applicant when needed. The applicant should submit them as soon as possible. Therefore, the visa collection date will be postponed as well. The Embassy is not responsible for any related economic losses and legal consequences if your visa application is rejected.
