Consular officers in Canadian offices in the US are to help Canadians who are travelling to, or living in the US. They cover the following services:

  • Notarial services;
  • Arrest and detention/legal services;
  • Funerals and funeral shipments;
  • Canadian citizenship matters;
  • Registration of Canadians abroad.

Canadian offices in the United States do not provide regular passport services.

Canadians in the United States can submit an application by mail or courier to Canada. Applications can be submitted in person at any Passport Canada service location in Canada.

In case Canadian passport is lost or stolen, local police must be informed and a police report or case number (if possible) must be obtained. Passport Canada at 1-800-567-6868 or one of Canadian offices must then be contacted to report that the passport is lost/stolen.

Canadian citizens requiring documents to be notarized may seek the services of a local notary public in the United States. Notary publics are commonly available at banks, business service firms, and through commercial courier firms. They typically provide these services at a reasonable cost.

US citizens do not require a visa to transit or visit Canada.

Fee payment:

  • If paying in US funds, make the payment instrument payable to the Consulate General of Canada (or, if applying in Washington, to the Embassy of Canada). Payment in US funds by certified cheque must be drawn on a bank located in the United States.
  • If paying in Canadian funds, make the payment instrument payable to the Receiver General for Canada. Payment in Canadian funds by certified cheque must be drawn on a bank located in Canada.

NOTE: Processing fees are non-refundable regardless of the outcome of the application.
