Bulgaria and the Czech Republic are Member States of the European Union. They share common values and have similar views on major issues of the European agenda. Both of the countries are partners in NATO. This strengthens the bilateral relationship and creates opportunities for enhancing the cooperation and for deepening the contacts between Bulgarians and Czechs. Bulgaria and the Czech Republic are countries with long-term relationship. The Bulgarian community in the Czech Republic nowadays, which is recognized as national minority in the country, further contributes to the mutual cohesion and for the welfare of both countries.

The Bulgarian Embassy provides consular assistance and consular services to Bulgarian citizens and legal entities abroad, as well as to citizens of the EU Member States that have no diplomatic missions in the host country, in accordance with the laws of the Republic of Bulgaria, the international treaties to which Bulgaria is a party, and the laws of the host country. Bulgarian missions abroad have no police powers and cannot issue orders to institutions in the host country.

The Consular Section of the Embassy provides a wide range of services including:

The diplomatic and consular representations of the EU member states can issue an Emergency Travel Document to Bulgarian citizens who have lost or had their documents stolen when in the country of their temporary or permanent residence there is no Bulgarian or diplomatic representation. An application is required for a temporary passport with a photo and documents which can prove the person's identity and citizenship. The validity term of the European Emergency Travel Document is determined on the basis of the minimum term necessary for the travel to be completed along the shortest route and the shortest period possible.

Any Bulgarian citizen residing abroad may submit a passport issuance application at a diplomatic or consular mission of the Republic of Bulgaria. The applicant has to appear in person because upon acceptance of the application consular officer will take digital images of the applicant's signature, face and fingerprints. Passport issuance applications are not accepted by diplomatic or consular missions that do not have available technical capacity for taking digital images of an applicant's signature, face and footprints.

The diplomatic or consular mission will, within 5 business days, notify the applicant as to whether the passport can be issued. In case certain discrepancies in the data filled in are detected, the diplomatic mission will, within 7 business days, notify the applicant thereof, requesting him/her to remove them. In case the applicant fails to remove all discrepancies within one month from being so notified, the passport issuance procedure is terminated. Upon receipt of a confirmation, the diplomatic mission will notify the applicant within 7 business days of the issuance of his/her document.
